Tinnitus - Constant ringing noise in ear

My mom has been suffering from Tinnitus Tinnitus - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia for the last couple of months. Even after visiting ENT specialists and doing multiple tests, she still hasn't found any relief from the constant ringing noise.

A search in the net revealed that there is no direct cure to Tinnitus. But, the kind of suffering my mom is undergoing is really disturbing me a lot. I've been in touch with a couple of my doctor friends and others who experience this symptom, but have not found a cure yet.

I'm looking at alternatives to english medicine too. If anyone has any info on this, kindly let me know. TIA.

Check these guys:
IMPCOPS.ORG

I have no commercial affiliation with them. Just eternally grateful to them. As they helped cure my mom of a skin allergy.

Bblost,

Thanks for the link. Also, I just a got a PM from LibranOf1987 mentioning that his Dad got cured of this problem after trying out Ayurveda.

I'm looking for alternatives like these. Thanks to you both for sharing.

Re: Tinnitus - Constant ringing noise in ear

First, my sympathies. I suffer from a very mild version after a surgery in my right ear, but the problem has largely dissipated with time.

Some hints:

1. Keep water out of the ear. For similar reasons, keep it warm.

2. The problem is further aggravated with spicy food.

3. The direct therapy (not cure) is by playing back a tone of frequency similar to the perceived frequency at a low volume. I used to play back white noise and it worked very, very well, so much so I could sleep at night when the problem was at its worst.

Cranky, thanks for the information. Could you let me know more on the above; like what instrument you used, etc. Also, was it prescribed by a Physician?

Re: Tinnitus - Constant ringing noise in ear

No it was not. It was prescribed by a musician's forum. Tinnitus is very common among musicians due to prolonged exposure to loud noise. And it wasn't an instrument, it was a computer program meant to test headphones set to generate white noise through my main system.

I would not suggest doing it if you're not comfortable with experimentation.

Some suggest noise of running water as an alternate. Anything that makes the continuous noise a little less noticeable. Of course the problem is not curable at all, until the offending cells die out completely.

Re: Tinnitus - Constant ringing noise in ear

Just an update to this thread so that it can help people who are in search for a cure for this condition.

Apparently, oil pulling(gargling Gingely oil morning and night daily) seems to work in stopping the ringing noise every time she gets it.

Thanks for the update. And sorry to hear about your mom. Its been a long time since you posted first and from what I know is that this condition cannot be cured.

However some therapies aim at 'coping' with it and how to 'manage' it or deal with it in day to day life. Also almost all patients get used to the ringing sound over time themselves. The main motive of any therapy is to improve the quality of life by keeping the patient's attention away by managing tinnitus. Obviously, you know all this by now, but may help others.

Regards,
Saket.

Re: Tinnitus - Constant ringing noise in ear

I have been suffering from Tinnitus for the past 3 years when it started with Vertigo. Vertigo subsided but this remained and after numerous consultations ranging from local doctors to specialists have come to a conclusion that I will have to live with it for the rest of my life as there is no cure for the same. Ayurvedic, Homeopathic, Allopathic all tried and nothing works. Initially I used to get irritated a lot esp when sleeping and the surroundings are quite, the ringing would sound so loud. Over the period of time I started ignoring it and now it hardly bothers me though at times I get reminded that I do have an issue.

I don't know if any one has seen the movie Baby driver where the lead actor has this issue and downs it with music while driving atleast.

Yep, spent countless hours on reading about Tinnitus, and almost every article says the same - No cure for Tinnitus. However, I read about Oil Pulling curing Tinnitus, somewhere, and I suggested it to my mom a couple of years back. Since then, she does oil pulling whenever she gets the ringing noise and stops complaining thereafter.

As stated in my earlier post, please try Oil Pulling for a couple of weeks. For the past two years, it has been very effective in getting rid off the noise every time my mom gets it.

Re: Tinnitus - Constant ringing noise in ear

I too have this issue of Tinnitus. Consulted couple of ENT's and their opinion was the same - there is no cure for it.
I also suffer from a type of Arthritis (apparently there are a hundred and fifty types) and after consulting n number of times for this incurable thing, I just stopped thinking about it, realising there's no point anyway.
And when I heard the same thing about Tinnitus, I just stopped thinking about it or curing it.

But what I have noticed is that its intensity increases whenever I am unable to get enough sleep. Other times, I believe I just got used to the mild noise. But I do get irritated and angry with loud noise or loud talking.

PS: I will check about this oil pulling thing and try it out next time its intensity increases.

Re: Tinnitus - Constant ringing noise in ear

I have Tinnitus in the right ear - have been suffering for the past 14 months now. Unfortunately there seems to be a family history of this - My Mom's eldest brother got it about 20 years back, followed by my mother about 12 years back.

Like others have said, essentially no cure. I live in London and had been to NHS, who gave me a leaflet on what it is, how to manage with counselling etc and sent me home with an advise to come back if my hearing got worse. I haven't seen any impact to hearing yet, though my sleep has taken a real beating. I sleep at 10:30 and up by 3-3:30 and cant go back to sleep. This lack of sleep affects productivity at work unfortunately.

Last week, after reading some reviews, I consulted a Chinese traditional medicine doctor and have started a therapy of Acupuncture and Herbal Tea. I was told it will take 3 months before any effects can be noticed.

Key points the Doctor told me were - eat food rich in Iron, Vitamin B, stay away from Alcohol.

A small correction - Oil pulling is swishing, not gargling, Gingely oil for around 10 mins.

What I read is proper sleep is very important in managing this condition. My mom did go on sleeping pills regime when it was severe, you might want to discuss with your doctor on this.

Lack of physical activities over a long period can trigger joint pains, Obesity can too. Consider brisk walk(max 5km) every morning after doctor's consultation.

Other things that can be considered are - going back to roots:

- Eating three meals a day in moderate quantity and with plenty of veggies.
- Making seasonal fruits as part of diet regime.
- Fish rather than hormone/chemical fed poultry chicken.
- Avoiding processed foods, packet foods and junks.
- Resistance training or any other physical activity daily. For men, physical activity is very important.
- Stress free life
- Practicing all these regularly and religiously

Not qualified to give all these suggestions, learnt these as part of Life's lessons. Please consult with your physician before practicing these.

Wishing you a speedy recovery from these conditions.
