Is the plastic surface smooth (like a painted panel) or slightly rough as the usual plastic trims? If it is the latter, the sticker doesn’t hold well and comes during pressure wash. Use the metal surface instead.

Oh that's strange. Any chance the black plastic had been cleaned at the service station or the pump with diesel etc?

No, however there were very heavy rains that the car was driven in continuously over a couple of weeks.
