Car Expense Tracker Tool

All of us have cars and we like to track lot of details about or cars (like Petrol bills, servicing costs, accessories cost etc etc).

I like to track lot of details about stuff I love, so I use an excel sheet to track such things about my car. Slowly, this excel sheet has evolved into a great tool for me to see patterns about my usage of car and its behavior.

I'd like to share this excel sheet with all you folks, so that you can use it and also add to it.

Car Expense Tracker.xlsx

Please share more such tools (iOS apps, Android apps, more such excel sheets etc) in this thread, so that all BHPians who like to track things have a single thread to look for.

Here are two screenshots that show what kind of information this excel sheet provides -

Re: Car Expense Tracker Tool

Idea! Why not Team-BHP build one so that users can use it for tracking their expenses and Team-BHP can do a market research/calculation on usage/expenses of different brands/cars? It also adds diversification to Team-BHP.

May be

BTW, you are getting good FE figures on your Ritz petrol.

Re: Car Expense Tracker Tool

Wow, I didn't know about the Windows app for car expense tracking (mostly because I've been away from Windows for past 4 years).

I forgot to mention about this app available for Samsung bada smartphones. It's called CarCon. It's not as good as aCar on Android but does the job well. I use it along with my excel sheet (I note down the figures in the app so that I don't forget).

Here's a video of this app -

Re: Car Expense Tracker Tool

How about adding some functionality of the sheet to compare the amount you spent to buy the car against savings over the years & point where you would extracted everything from the car & you break even !!!

Can you elaborate more?

How do you define the savings here? Break even comes into picture when you are comparing expenses for a petrol car vs a diesel car. Here we don't have anything to compare with.

^^^ Or if alternatively the car was running as Taxi then finding break even would make sense, i.e. when the earnings from the car cross the expenses on the car.

break-even point (BEP) is the point at which cost or expenses and revenue are equal: there is no net loss or gain.

The purchase cost of the car was "x"
Post adding all fuel, accessories & servicing the cost became "x + y"

Cost of commute per km using taxis or autos is "a"
Multiply this with the total distance travelled by the car "b"

Subtract "a + b" from "x + y", this will eventually reach zero & then start going positive after one point. Determine the distance "b" using the equation "x + y/a" to see what's your break even point.

I am doing this from a perspective that, if I don't have my car, I will use a taxi or auto to commute. Obiviously using public transport would be far cheaper but, I am sure not a lot of us, use this option if their vehicle is not available.

That's a very good idea but won't be possible in the scope of an excel sheet. We will need systems that can track even changes in taxi/auto/bus fairs over time and considers that also in calculations.

I use fuellogic pro on android. Very good app, which takes into consideration fuel costs, service costs etc, and provides all sorts of values and graphs.

Yes it is. I recently moved to Android and checked this app out. Donated to them and got the Pro version of the app. It's simply awesome.

It imported all the data from my Excel sheet with breeze. Hats off to developer.
