Should IT/ITes/BPO firms enjoy exemption from Industrial Employment Act? Karnatake state govt. will allow its IT/ITes/BPO cash cows to enjoy holiday from Industrial Employment (Standing Orders) Act, 1946 till August of 2013.
Several 'captains' of the industry (the usual Infosys, Nasscom, etc know-alls) have influenced this decision.
I have been fortunate to have worked for Product MNCs through out my career and have only heard, open-mouthed, practices the IT services cos. put their employees thru - strict 10 hour work days (monitored with swipe in/out cards), weekends in office being norm than exception, leave applications being frowned upon, etc.
It is understood these cos. bring in the $$$ by buckets, generate large tax revenues and sit on cash piles, but should they continue to enjoy exemption from a Law which has strict procedures on work hours and employee termination.
The common excuses doled out by HR - "knowledge industry requires flexibility in employee relations", "we already take care of employees and review employee benefits annually". Do these words hold much water?
