We've over a 100+ audio cassettes from the last decade lying around in a box. We don't listen to any of them anymore and don't even own a working cassette player :deadhorse. We have some old classics and some 90s and early 2000s in the collection. I really do not know if they are of any value in this age (much unlike LP records), and in the age of the smartphones and instant download, who'd listen to a cassette?

Any ideas? What did you guys do with your collection? I'm sure everyone here had one!

I can only think of putting them up for sale for cheap and see if someone bites.

Apart from cassettes I even have a Big Philips Stereo Deck with two Big wooden speakers bought in 1995. There are two slots for cassettes and non of them work properly. The FM and AUX inputs are there but I feel that It takes too much of space and furniture for the installation and the sound output is not that great (260W).

I doubt if any one would be interested to buy them even if I put it on sale @ a dirt cheap price.

I have seen people dumping these items in Big bazar's Exchange Fair. Though its a useless scheme but at least you could dump it and buy something else.

Yeah, we have an AIWA with two slots for cassettes and a 3-CD changer. The only feature that is used in that currently is the FM radio, and we did not dump it because the speakers are of excellent quality and still pump out bass.

Sometimes I feel like a sucker paying for stuff that is not meant to be used forever. But well, I like what improvements new technology brings so I guess I can't complain!

This is assuming you have already digi-converted them to some other present day audio format, and/or you just don't need the tapes any more:

I'd say make someone happy by putting up an ad for free Kishor Kumar hits on tape (err.. Kumar Sanu, rather, looking at the time frame you mention) ....I am sure you'll make someone happy.

Or, buy a walkman for 10 bucks on eBay and enjoy the tapes occasionally! It is fun to go down the nostalgic lanes sometimes.

I have hundreds of tapes myself and a Sony boombox from the late 90's which still runs like new. I listen to tapes once in a few months just for fun, while I clean the basement or do some chore in the garage :)

Ah those mix tapes that used to eat up all my pocket money!

I lost them all one chunk at a time with every move.

you could put in "Give away thread " ,some one will pick it up may be .

At-least the wooden enclosures should be of great quality. A nice project for DIYer to use the box, swap the speakers and get a good in home entertainment system. Btw I have seen offices/homes where people installed car speakers in ceilings/enclosures etc. Just a thought!

Cassettes? Some years back, I was wondering what to do with my CDs! Completely transferred to iTunes, so they were just lying around unused. Last I heard, the case logic was circulating between the Bangalore Moderators.

Put it up on the giveaway thread.

I bought the device which converts tapes into MP3 since I cant find most of the older songs now (and in that combination mostly from HMV).
Its still not used and hope to use it one day !

try this tutorial if you want to convert the songs to MP3, this method uses Audacity an opensource tool.

Better to junk it. Its a trade off between remaining nostalgic at the cost of valuable shelf space and moving on to accommodate something better and newer.
I had faced a similar dilemma a few years back. Preferred to junk it and embrace MP3s.
My Video CDs are next in line

Went through same cycle twice. Once when i replaced all my Cassettes to CD's and then a second time when i converted all my CDs to FLAC.

The first conversion was more painful, in finding the CD's in India and in US, but eventually i had almost everything i had on Cassettes on my CD's.

If there are no tracks in those Cassettes that you would want, and dont have a digital version of them already. Then get them converted and either dump them. It would be tough to find takers (buyers) for Cassettes these days.

Another option in, some of these Video mixing folks use older Cassettes to mix audio with Video. I am not sure if they still do that, but worth a try.

What i am puzzled today is what to do with my LP's. At the moment i am going to keep them and buy a Turntable to use them soon.
