hey guys,
wanted to ask ya'll something....imm giving my 12th this year..wanted to find out...are there an decnt colleges in india offering automobile engineering in india...if so could u just help me out by giving me some details....or is it just offered for masters?...

As far as Mumbai is concerned, the answer is NOOOOOO!!!

Yes, undergraduate courses are offered in colleges, a select few though, some affiliated to Mumbai University while some affiliated to Pune University too.

What ever you do, do not do Automobile Engineering under Mumbai University. The course reeks of haphazard planning and outdated syllabus, combined with their lacklustre attitude to teach absolute bollocks and to take exams for the heck of it, doesn't matter whether you learn something or not. They will rob you of any passion that you might have in you, and will force you to hand away all your money to tuitions.

I have no clue about the colleges down south, but since Mumbai University is conisdered to be one of the more reputed universities in India, I can only imagine what the lesser known universities are like. Whatever you do , also stay away from quack universities and those which offer AMIE courses or LIMSTE courses, nobody has heard of them, and you will only waste your time.

If you can afford it, get out of the country, try getting admission abroad. The options in universities abroad are astounding, and they have a more professional approach when it comes to teaching. If you absolutely cannot afford to study abroad, then try to do course under Mumbai University, but DO NOT expect wonders from the syllabus, do not expect phenomenal extra curricular activities, do not expect hands on practical training, do not expect immense backing from the automotive industry. These things though very well sound good on paper, do not expect a job, let alone a high paying job, unless you've aced right through the course, hats off to those who can. The less you expect the less you get disappointed.

No job after doing the course? Then whats the point? And i am guessing that these courses aren't too popular. And finally, i hope u are not telling this from personal experience.

Hey dude are you really sure that you want to do Auto Engg?? If you ask me I would actually suggest you to do your Mechanical Engg. and then do your PG in Auto. Thats what I am planning to do. Trust me, I had the same confusion last year...and am currently doing my Mech. Engg. in Bangalore itself. By doing Mech. Engg. you have a wider range of options for the future...but in Auto Engg. you have to concentrate into one field itself...sure the industry is going to grow 10 fold in the next 4 years, that is when you finish your Engg. And with foreign companies setting up plants in India they would actually ask for people who have more knowledge than of "Automobiles" itself, because there is more to your vehicle than that.
If you want to know of colleges there are no derth of them here in Karnataka...all you will have to do is give your COMED-K examination, that is for entrance into colleges in Karnataka with an annual fee structure of Rs.1,10,000/-...but there is another disadvantage there....none of the colleges that offer Automobile Engg. are in B'lore all in districts near B'lore...you got:
1)PES in Mandya that offers you and should be your top priority.
2)B.V.Bhoomi Reddy College in Hubli thats good but RAGGING IS AN ISSUE THERE...AND BY RAGGING I MEAN REAL MEAN RAGGING.

Will keep you informed of more colleges as these are the ones that are there right on top...but keep in mind what I had to say, Mech.Engg. is a better option.

I earnestly feel that there are no decent colleges (including IITs) offering a B.Tech/B.E in auto here in India. Atleast this was the case when I was in my 12th looking to do something similar.

My advice to you is, dont specialize in auto during undergraduation. Number 1 because there arent any good colleges, number 2 because auto engineering is nothing but mechanical engineering.

Going in for mechanical broadens your perspective on various aspects of automotive design, and also teaches you manufacturing engineering etc. which is needed if at all you want a job later.

Companies usually demand generalists at the undergrad level.....if they need specialists in any field like metallurgy/paint tech or even styling they pick post grads.

So plan on doing auto specialization after your mechanical engineering. Going in for auto is going to be a costly mistake, in my not-so-humble opinion.

Can bhpians tell me about the best auto/mechanical engineering colleges in india? i have heard that DCE, the IITs and BITS pilani are renowned institutes for the same. Can you elaborate on other options in/near maharashtra.

Its DCE for sure. Although i did my engineering in Comp. Sc, i have heard that our Mech department is best in Asia. The hybrid car, formula 1 car, 150kmpl fuel efficiency car, Bio diesel project.. all are testimonies to that.


P.S. I am not being biased.

Is the above mentioned college reputed enough for good future prospects cause i have never heard anything about this college nor about its faculty, students, achievements. What about maharashtra institute of tech, VJTI etc.

If i remember correctly ported_head is from that college...he'l give you how good (or bad) that college is.

I guess the IITs or DCE or BITS, Pilani would be a good choice. REC (what is it called now?) are also good - not all of them though.

Then there are a few colleges down south like PSG Tech ( ;) ) which are pretty good too.

But if you want the real stuff DCE or IIT it is.

I am not wrong then the RECs are noe called NITs i.e. National Institute of Technology

Dude search around I have ranted a lot on the forum about the college, and I'll make it simpler since the ranting really gets me worked up. NO.

I don't know what DU syllabus is like, but I like DCE for the extra curricular projects they seem to support heavily.

DCE is supposed to be nigh impossible to get into, for non-Delhiites. Going by the support extended to students, try RVCE, Bangalore. They don't have an automotive dept, but their mech dept is good.
