How to start a School

well TBHPians - the question is loud and clear, how do you start a school in India (specifically in Karnataka)?

What kind of clearances are needed, how much land, who gives a permit ...

any pointers?

re: How to start a School

Interesting question. I dont have an answer, but some titbits of information
1. What kind of school? - Playschool like Eurokids etc? Straight forward as it works on a franchise model and the main distributor/agency will take care of all the trouble of setting it up for you. For a regular school, you need approvals from the education department. It depends on what all you offer - upto 7th std or 10 std? Kannada medium or english medium? state syllabus or CBSE/ICSE? The cost, what I have heard, for the license will run into 10s of lakhs (not sure what all is involved) in addition to all the infrastructure. I am not familiar with the procedure, but this is what I have heard.
2. Usual approach taken? - People buy an existing school - along with the necessary license/permissions from DDPI and infrastructure. Even though you may spend more money, you get immediate revenue as the school is already running. You can look at improving it after you take over. Just watch for advertisements in newspapers for schools which are on sale.

I would be curious to know your progress. Hope you will keep us updated here (or to me via PM).

A good initiative on the same. I came across this link which provided more or less the details of starting a school in K'taka.

If you ask me the process is too complicated and tiresome involving a lot of palm greasing and may take years to actually be successful. Add to that the affiliations/subscription costs, plus infrastructure. Not a wise choice. Best is to opt for the franchising where the major expense is the location/property cost. Hope you do a detailed analysis of both the options before taking a plunge.

Re: How to start a School

I am intently watching this thread. My wife is a Montessori trained teacher and she has ideas of opening her own in a year or two's time. Hopefully, I will get some pointers here.

Do you know what are the franchisee options for K-12 education?

Also does anyone know whether Banks loan money to schools etc. and on what terms?
