Spot a child in distress? Call CHILDLINE on 1098

CHILDLINE is a national , 24-hour , free , emergency phone and outreach service for children in need of care and protection. The programme initiated in 1996 as a pilot project in Mumbai by Tata Institute of Social Sciences has grown to be operational in around 300 districts across India. Currently the programme is run by CHILDLINE India Foundation supported by Ministry of Women and Child Development , Government of India.

A toll free number 1098 is available in these districts. Any person can dial this number when they see a child in need of care and protection . CHILDLINE reaches out to the marginalized children with the aim of providing them rehabilitation and care from unsafe situations.

A child is a person below the age of 18 years. ( UNCRC - 1989 , JJ Act 2000 , POCSO Act 2012 etc ) . The four rights for a child are SPDP ( Survival , Protection , Development and Participation )

CHILDLINEs in each district work in partnership with academic institutions ( Social work colleges) , NGOs , Government system and the Corporate sector.

When you see a child in distress do call the number 1098
