RIP 'Eli Wallach' (aka Tuco)

The legendary Eli Wallach is no more - he passed away on the 24th, at the age of 98. His most famous role was in 'The Good, the Bad and the Ugly' where he played the character of a Mexican bandit Tuco. I saw the movie way back in my schooldays and was struck by the way he brought the character to life - he was the epitome of all those nasty, tough bandits we read about in the old westerns. He also played a lesser role in another blockbuster western 'Mackenna's Gold'. (I have both Cds in my collection).

He could effortlessly slip into any kind of role. A lesser known Whoopi Goldberg comedy 'The Associate' (1996) that I enjoyed watching, had him play the role of an irascible investor tycoon. I recently watched a romantic film (aka chick flick) The Holiday (2006) where he played the role of a Hollywood writer of yesteryear - a kindly, erudite old gent - worlds apart from Tuco.

A family man, devoted to his wife for all of the 66 years they were married (until his death) - a rarity in Hollywood - he will be remembered for long by all Tuco fans.

RIP Eli Wallach!

Equally impressive was his performance in Magnificent Seven (which was copied from Seven Samurai and also was re-made in Hindi as Khote Sikke, also Sholey was inspired from M7).
Eli Wallach infused life into villain character and invoked such a hate with his style, mannerism and dialogue delivery - a treat to watch.
RIP Eli Wallach

"If you want to shoot, just shoot - Don't talk" - one of the most memorable lines of Tuco.

Oh yes - The Magnificent Seven - I should have mentioned that - what a classic it was and a terrific star cast too. Another CD that I have.

I believe this line was delivered by 'The Bad' character, Lee Van Cliff. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Nope - it was by Tuco. He says it when he is in a bathtub, after shooting the chap who had come to kill him.

Re: RIP 'Eli Wallach' (aka Tuco)

Wished good old Tuco could complete a "grand" century!!
RIP Eli.

His films were a movie goers delight and some of his most notable ones were:

-Good, Bad and Ugly
- God father 3.

Yet, he portrayed a power role in the 1953 Frank Sinatra film From Here to Eternity". He played the pivotal role of Maggio.

Other notable contribution-Lord Jim with Peter O Toole and How to Steal a Million(1966) with Audrey Hepburn.

Truly a Legend!!

Correction - That's from The Good, The bad and the Ugly and not MacKenna's Gold.

RIP Hombre !
You had filled up my growing years. A thousand fascinating images which created lot of dreams of wanting to be a gunslinger.

Adios.

A small offering from my side - the famous bathtub scene :
