Compact Fusion Reactor may become a reality, Lockheed says

Lockheed's Skunk works team has again trying to prove their niche and claims "Engineering a Better tomorrow" by giving a commitment to build a working prototype of a compact fusion reactor in Five years time.

While fission continues to power our nuclear reactors today, fusion offers a cleaner, safer source of energy, Nuclear fusion is the process by which the sun works. Our concept will mimic that process within a compact magnetic container and release energy in a controlled fashion to produce power we can use, claims Skunk works. (Skunk guys are those who built the SR-71 Black bird too..)

The implications of realization of this technology is mind boggling, In addition to what they have mentioned train travel could also become very cheap.
This is very exciting news!!

This can lead to really "cheap to run" electric cars powered by this cheap power. Each town/village can have their own fusion reactors. Big offices/factory can have their own reactors.

Lockheed has made a lot claims, without any data to substantiate them. These claims are very ambitious on both the time scale and the science scale. The international scientific community has responded to this press release with a lot of scepticism. Being a Physicist and a Scientist myself, when I read the press release, I took all of it with truckloads of salt.

See the MIT's Technology Review comment on the Lockheed Martin press release here.

Also, see the comments by Nature Magazine, a science journal of the highest repute here.

In general though, it would indeed be in humanities interests if these claims have any truth in them.

Yes, Academicians and those you are fundamentally very much on the subject are unable to agree to the tall claims made by the company.

There is also an update where the progress on those lines made would be demo'ed in public after which the patents would be filed. Hence the final conclusion for now is

“One has to be extremely sceptical about whether the whole thing is going to hold up once all of the details come out.” as mentioned by Stephen Dean
