True, but you can *still* configure the broadband router/modem such that you have to enter the password before the modem connects - inconvenient, but would work.

I do that johy.
My router is configured in "Bridge mode". I set it up this way as doing pppoe through the modem makes my system go on NAT and that breaks some networking things, plus you have to setup stuff like port forwarding etc., etc., to use some applications.
So when I boot up, I "dial into" using pppoe and get connected. This gives me much more control and using scripts etc., I can actually control my connetion to a great degree
