Whats the mode of camera that you are using ??
I also tried to get the pics of all my matchbox vehicles, but all the pics are coming flashy as these cars have a flashy colors.

@hrishikesh, I use Macro Mode to capture the shots.

As far as achieving subtle colors instead of flashy ones is concerned, I avoid using Flash. As opposed to using flash, I use simple external lighting setup. I try using a couple of Emergency Lights/Table Lamps for lighting, as these are easy to find at home and very easy to manage too.

Also remember to keep a pocket sized tripod handy, this is very usefull when you are capturing in low light conditions in Macro/Super Macro modes.
