Guys... am a newbie fish keeper. I’ve got a basic aquarium set up. A glass tank of 2feet x 1feet * 1.5feet with filter and LED light.

I’ve got about 8 fishes, mostly gold. Recently the gold fishes developed a red blood like spot in its fin. Any Idea what could it be? How to treat it? I just have general Aid with me.

Your tank is overstocked and most likely under-filtered.

With that out of the way, i have no clue about the brand of medicine you have and you could try it out.

And remember to use Aquarium specific salt and not the household salt. Good luck.

@Abhi3284: You could attach the plant to that piece of wood either by black strings or aquarium friendly glue. They don't like direct light all that much. You could add a little liquid fertilizer on a weekly basis along with your water change. They are far more hardy than java ferns in my experience.

I am planning to get a balcony fish pond (FRP, 65 or 100 litre).

Please provide suggestions on the plants and fish to add to the pond. Would the plants be enough, or would I need some kind of filtration also?

My plan was to add some plants and guppies or other small fish.

Hi KL-KA,

A balcony fish pond is a really good choice.

You can plan a mini garden around it.

Guppies are the best choice. You can also add few swordtails/mollies for some colour.

Floating plants are easy along with a lilly.

Keep doing regular water changes and you can safely skip the filtration bit. If you do have power source nearby, you can club a filtration setup with a nice setup with rocks/bamboo for the water outlet...like a mini waterfall :)

That's a good site for plants.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Where can one find a pond?. Preferably from a store (no online) in bangalore. One of my balconies has a space that i can utilize.

Any good nursery should have them. Get ones that are not painted on the inside.

Saw this weird specimen at a nearby pet shop. Not sure if it is even legal.

This is the long term plan. I'll take it one step at a time.

My requirements were:
  1. The fish should be comfortable. So, I did not want to use a small pot for the purpose.
  2. The weight should be kept as low as possible. So, large terracotta bowls were also ruled out.
Decided to buy a 65 litre or 100 litre garden pond made of FRP with sandstone finish from a seller I found on Indiamart. Looks good, and priced reasonably. Will provide updates soon regarding progress.

This is a red eared slider. Indian turtles and tortoises are illegal. RES are a pest imported usually from Singapore. Very much legal. But it will grow to 12-14 inches, and it should never be released to the wild.

Continuing with my earlier posts, could someone please suggest plants which would be good for a balcony pond which gets around 5 hours of direct sunlight. I prefer plants that do not need CO2 tanks.

Also suggest a filter, and where I can get it from.

I'm planning to keep a few shrimps, guppies and tetra in a 100 litre tank

You can go through the link i mentioned in my post. They provide details for each plant and you can pick and choose.

For my garden ponds, i prefer to keep a lilly, some floating plants like water lettuce.

Used to have a pond full of floating ludwigias...beautiful to behold on the surface but they literally cover up the water areas. So off they went.

Send a pic of the pond you are going to buy please.

I'm buying the 100 litre pond that you can see in this page https://www.kntcreationsindia.com/ponds.html

Thank you for the suggestions for plants. I'll start out with lilly. Any suggestions for filters?

Nice. That looks good. How much is it? The one's i have in my garden are all cement ones. But then i don't have to be concerned about weight :)

For filtration, depends. I would recommend good plants, guppies and other hardy fishes with weekly water changes.

Would keep the balcony clutter free.

Otherwise you could go for a overhead filter or an external cannister filter, but would be overkill for your setup.

This cost 4900. A fish tank would have been the conventional way out, but I did not want to use up space inside the house.

Thanks for the suggestions for the filters. I will start off without filters and add it later, if needed.

The concept of balcony pond looks exciting.

One thing which is stopping me from keeping fish is how do we feed them if we had to go for a vacation for suppose 2 weeks (or may be a month)?

What do people generally do in such scenarios. Is there something automatic system available that will work flawlessly by itself? Or does it involve handing over keys to neighbors and asking them to take care of fish.
