The concept of balcony pond looks exciting.
One thing which is stopping me from keeping fish is how do we feed them if we had to go for a vacation for suppose 2 weeks (or may be a month)?

The open pnd (not Aquarium with synthetic plants) will attract algae from sunlight & hence pond may have its own ecosystem in some time. That shall take care of feeding issue. ALs such ponds attract insects & mosquitoes which can also become party food for fishes :D

Search for automatic fish feeders & Amazon has some really good feeding machines. Do run it at least a week before leaving so that you can set the timer & amount of feed you wish to drop in pond. I have BOYU & I usually set it for one feed per day pattern.

Regards.

I'm buying the 100 litre pond that you can see in this page https://www.kntcreationsindia.com/ponds.html

Hi, may I know how much was the price. Also, how much does this pond weight. Is it safe to be put in balcony.

I paid 4900. This weighs less than 10 kg. Adding the weight of 100 litres of water, it would weigh less per sq ft than a gas cylinder. Should be safe to put it in the balcony.

Thank you for the suggestions for plants. I'll start out with lilly. Any suggestions for filters?

Would you know the inner dimensions of the pond - length, width and depth.

Just a few snaps (edited on the phone. overdone i guess. sorry for that) taken yesterday. One large, one medium and three small ponds.

Just guppies, swordtails and goldies for now.

Hi everyone. I need some advice on restocking my fish aquarium. It's nothing fancy. Its the standard FNG fishkeeping shop tank made of fiber. About 3ft x 4ft. The initial set of fish that I got with the tank died gradually over a period of 10months and then I emptied the tank and let it sit idle. Now I'm planning to restock again.

I know there's some process to follow to prep the tank before I get new fish but I'm not sure what to do exactly. Can anybody guide me on that? Also, on the type of fish.. I'll just get 5-6 hardy to begin and don't plan to expand further. I'll check with the FNG but another advice I'd appreciate is good quality food and medicine (chlorine and other stuff). The FNG earlier gave some generic things which I think did more harm than good. Even the food pellets I got from him stink and need to be soaked in the water before feeding.

tldr: Need advice on preparing the tank for restocking the tank and food and medicine.

Hey nonstop-driver,

Will try and be of some help (i hope).

Could you please confirm the tank measurements once again? 3ft x 4ft seems odd.

I assume the tank is dry now? Refill water, check for leaks if the tank has been lying dry for a long time.

Get good gravel (https://www.aquazones.in/ada-aqua-gravel-2/), Get a good external filter or aquaclear's hang on back filter.

Seachem prime will help you out with removing chlorine from the tap water.

For food, if you really like your fishes buy good brands like hikari, new life spectrum or even ocean free.

Hardy fishes would be guppies and a common pleco.

Set up some driftwood, rocks and fake plants (to start with) and let the tank cycle.

Then you can start looking at some good fishies.

Oh and please put up a pic of the tank :)

Thanks for your reply Deathwalkr. The dimensions are 18" x 8" x 20". It is dry now and has the old gravel, fake plant, and filter still intact. What is meant by tank cycling? Should I run the motor without fish for a few days and replace the water? I'll look into the brands you've mentioned for food and chlorine filtering and upload a picture later from phone. Thanks again.

Ok, now that's a standard dimension. Around 50L or so i think.

Tank cycling is basically allowing your setup to develop a healthy bacterial system that would prevent water from getting too toxic for your fishes.

Otherwise your fishes would face a nitrogen spike which would be deadly for them.

Get this if you can spare the monies:
https://indianaquarium.com/products/...r-power-filter

Fill up water, let the filter run, get some guppies in there, feed them, let them be for a few days. Do a 50% water change every week.

Hi Guys,

I am looking for some help. I have 3 Blue Gold fishes and one Angel. The angel and One Blue Gold are about two years old and the other two gold are about 6 months old. For a week or so. The gold fishes have stopped coming to the surface for food. The angel is eating just fine but the gold fishes are not eating. They are just staying in one corner. I haven’t seen them eating food for a week now and there’s a lot of food wasted on the bottom every day. These were just fine till a week back. I don’t know what happened. Can someone help?

The expert on this thread is @deathwalker so lets wait for his inputs. Meantime you need to share more data - (i) when did you put the fish in? was it all together or in batches; (iii) when did you do a 50% water change last or any water change. (iv) what is the size of your tank; (v) is this your start with this hobby (vi) have the gold fish been put in there only a few hours ago?

Fish not coming up to eat can be a sign of several factors - infection in the gold fish, nitrogen or chlorine levels in the water, pH levels. While you wait till @deathwalker responds do the following - (a) siphon out the food debris from the tank - unhealthy to leave it there to rot; (b) change 50% of the water - but leave that tap water in a bucket for 20 to 30 minutes to let the gases out. Use a chlorine remover if you have one. Let the temperature of the water in the bucket and the tank equalize and then slowly pour the water in.

It is possible if the fish are new that they are carrying some infection from the shop itself. Did you put the angel fish in after the gold fish and with the shop water that came with the angel fish? if yes then the bacteria in that water are not sitting well with the gold fish.

Hi V. Narayan,

I will answer the questions line by line.

1. The angel and one gold was put in about two years back. Rest two golds were put in about six months back.
3. I have changed water thrice in last 2 weeks since the water was becoming cloudy earlier within 3-4 days.
4. It’s a two feet tank having capacity of about 50 litres.
5. I have been keeping fishes since 2013 but this is first time I am experiencing something like this.

Subject to @deathwalkers advice one route you could try is to take the fish out very gently and keep them in a bucket (after temperature equalization). Drain the tank completely. Clean the tank, all artifacts, pumps, filters. glass sides, bottom & gravel with salt water or potassium permanganate. Then refill, let the chlorine evaporate for 30 minutes, then re-put your fish in very gently. Best of luck.

That's what I did once when faced with a similar problem in 2007. That tank was about 500 litres. It took me almost the whole morning.

Hi,

What filtration do you have in your tank? 50L is too small a tank for goldies and angels. Goldies eat and crap a lot so they require a good biological filtration.

Excess food in the bottom is adding onto your water woes.

Please put up a few pics as well.

Do what Narayan sir mentioned and hope for the best.

My piece of advice, get some guppies or dwarf tetras or a betta for your tank :)

@deathwalker makes a very good point about your tank being overcrowded. That could be a cause. And also on what filtration you use and how large are your goldfish. Please send photos of the full tank in one frame so we can judge the size of the fish versus the tank. Thanks. Best of luck.
