Every evening after office hours I do a videocall with close family members. But yesterday I had to skip. Managed with a regular phone call.

During the outage, Whatsapp was actually misleading. It was blaming users to check their internet connection. I toggled between wifi and data with no success. Every other app was working fine. I was about to reinstall and that's when my kid brought another mobile to my notice with the exact same issue.

I think I need atleast one alternate app in addition to Zuckerberg family for casual communications.

I hadn't even realised WhatsApp was down until I read the TeamBHP post! . Like a few of you guys, I too don't have Facebook/Instagram accounts. Had this outage taken place during daytime, it would have bothered me and my wife very much, as it is one of the platforms kids use for online learning.

None of my critical things are handled via whatsapp/facebook. Nor am I too active on them that couple of hours downtime that causes any inconvenience, if at all.

In my case atleast “life goes on”.

To all the people and businesses around the world who depend on us, we are sorry for the inconvenience caused by today’s outage across our platforms. We’ve been working as hard as we can to restore access, and our systems are now back up and running. The underlying cause of this outage also impacted many of the internal tools and systems we use in our day-to-day operations, complicating our attempts to quickly diagnose and resolve the problem.

Our engineering teams have learned that configuration changes on the backbone routers that coordinate network traffic between our data centers caused issues that interrupted this communication. This disruption to network traffic had a cascading effect on the way our data centers communicate, bringing our services to a halt.

Our services are now back online and we’re actively working to fully return them to regular operations. We want to make clear at this time we believe the root cause of this outage was a faulty configuration change. We also have no evidence that user data was compromised as a result of this downtime.

This mainly affected those who use Fb to login to other apps like games. I didn't even know about this till a young cousin called me up saying he cant play since Fb login is not happening and global server is down.

Fb is a cancer and there was an article recently where they let hate speech and violent content stay on because it generates 'more engagement' ergo more profit.

Was not even aware of the outage since I was neck deep in a Left 4 Dead 2 (L4D2) gaming session. Besides, within my friend circle, I've got multiple ways of communicating. Discord, Signal, Telegram, Steam messenger and what not. So these Zucc-family platforms going down are no biggie.

At my age, I am so glad to change my habit of browsing all day (last year and before) vs now I barely use FB and Instagram.

Last but not the least, agreed with AZT that FB is a cancer and it should be shut down. I'm glad that Zucc lost 7 billion. Hell, that space-lizard should lose all of it.

Mark lost $ 7 bln on his net worth and not from his bank account so it hardly made a difference as his current net worth is still more than $ 120 bln+.

The current version of BGP is version 4 (BGP4), which was published as RFC 4271 in 2006 is what is being used globally (Amazing as to the stability of the implementation considering it has not changed since then).

One of the ironies I see is that the internet was established with an architectural model, such that a single point of failure should not impact the entire web. However with the growth of very large corporations and the centralization happening within them, we are starting to see service impacts globally even when there is failure in one of them.

I use Whatsapp but didn't felt the outage.
Instagram I rarely use and FB for me is just a Birthday reminder app.
I am addicted to Teambhp though and through this thread only I came to know that something happened ;-)

Although this disruption didn't affect me, it did to my parents as they usually call my brother who lives abroad and were a bit panicked as they were not sure what to do next.

I am not sure why people have so negative opinions about facebook and instagram. Sure, they can kill your time, but it is up to how one uses it. I am not active on fb as such but do follow activities especially about people who I know but are not in contact.

Just the day FB went down, I got to know that our neighbour uncle who was in US with his daughter passed away. I had not talked to him since we left the place when I was 6 years old, but it was good to know that he died in peace and being an army man, he was doing good all these years considering aunty passed away too early (when I was 10, I am 35 now).

I use insta when I want reference images for interior design, cars, machines or if I want to show something to my kid like wild animals etc. Plus, people get real creative with memes and jokes. The only thing that gets my goat is the reels and short videos, its a cringe-fest for most part.

At our home, the young one was most affected. I heard some muffled curses and something break. Later I was informed that the outage had struck during "boyfriend time"

Later on I forwarded this and got myself blocked.
Needless to say, the wife was not amused at my, what she calls, childish shenanigans.
