The Blood Moon Eclipse, July 2018

Was looking forward to photograph the eclipse today. Blood Moon too.
And what do you know. Completely overcast sky and no chance of any moon shots. Some friends in the right places advised driving to a location about 120 kms away, where the possibility of clear skies was higher.
Took a chance and did precisely that and am glad that i did.

Good shot!

Due to too much cloud i missed taking the snaps this time. I went up to the terrace at 1am but it was all covered with cloud.

I was able to take few similar shots of the Lunar Eclipse from 31st January 2018. That time i got a clear sky but due to the haze and pollution of Kolkata, i was not able to get a crisp pic as yours. I have shot the below pics by Canon 70-300 IS USM on a 6D body.

Beautiful! Especially the reddish moon. Did you get a shot of Mars close to the Moon?

Try as i might i could not locate where Mars was. I know zilch about Astronomy, particularly identifying stars and such. I can make out the big dipper and the Pole Star since i require that for my night photography, but that's about all.

If you are using an Android Phone, please download the app called 'Skymap'. Its a very useful app by which you can locate the planets, stars, constellations etc etc. By sitting inside the room I used to locate the pole star or the Milky-way. Milky-way falls between Sagittarius & Aquarius.

The only negative side is, this app is not supported in I-phone.

Thank you for that information. As luck would have it, i use an i phone. There is an app called "SkyMapper" but i haven't yet figured out how to use it.

On the iPhone, use SkyView.

Skymap was on iOS as well but the developers did not make it iOS 11-compliant so it went off.

I got clear skies where i was, but was limited by the range of my lens. Nevertheless, i got to click the entire sequence and also watched the spectacle unfold before my eyes. Here is my contribution which i had shared on Fb and Instagram.

Great work, benbsb29. That is a creative way of showing the phases and very well done.

Re: The Blood Moon Eclipse, July 2018

Hope an unlucky person's post is allowed among the posts by lucky ones who got to shoot the eclipse...

I was eager to take to the eclipse pictures. But by Friday afternoon, it was evident that it'll be cloudy in Bengaluru. So decided to sleep. but then friends suggested that we drive some distance and try. if possible, good; if not, then it'll just be a drive. So we started at 22:00 from home and drove 80kms and stopped at a village off the Mysore highway at 23:15. the moon was visible very well. But just around 11:45 when the eclipse time started, the clouds covered it completely. All I could do was see the moon on the Star tracker app and eat a Pizza in a CCD. Superstitious people ensured that the roads and even the CCD were deserted. It was a good night drive to begin the weekend

The eclipsed moon was behind those clouds

The empty roads were fun to drive on

The moon was behind there

The pizza was eclipsed by our stomachs

What are you talking about? Unlucky? You?

You got to eat that delicious looking pizza. Lucky you.

ps: Didn't know that CCD made pizza from first principles. Looks delicious.

Thanks earthian. I appreciate the feedback. As i said, i missed having a better lens.

This was the first time i ever tried taking shots of the moon, and more so an eclipse. I'm quite pleased with how it turned out, although better pics of the blood moon would have been nice.
