I don't think anyone's mentioned this yet:
Khuda Kay Liye (Pakistan)
It is a great movie showing how religious fanaticism destroys the mind of a sane human being making them do actions that they'll regret later. It also touches upon the atrocities normal immigrants of a particular faith faced in the US.

A Day (2017) - Korean

Similar to other movies where each day just loops. But I quite liked this one. Short, simple but yet it can make you think.

Rating - 4.5/5

Parasite (Korean)

Happened to watch this last month since I follow Song's movies (some amazing acting in some of his films).

This movie doesn't disappoint either. Great acting by all coupled with some good comedy.

Rating - 4.75/5

PS - Not recommended for kids.

Highly recommend other Song's/Bong's combo movies as well.

Parasite (Korean)

I caught this movie in a theater yesterday. I was intrigued by the trailers and the actual movie is even more worthwhile. It is difficult to categorize this; it starts as a black comedy but soon metamorphoses into something more disturbing. It exposes the base nature of the human mind. A good watch!

And again as Naveen said, not for kids and younger teenagers.

Rating - 4.5/5

Miracle In Cell No. 7 (2013) - Korean

A beautifully made movie of a mentally challenged prisoner and his relationship with his daughter. Brilliant acting by the lead actor and the kid. The other prisoners also supported him well. Although there are quite a few good laughs, you may need a few tissues while you watch.

Rating - 5/5 (Must Watch)

Extreme Job (2019) - Korean

An action comedy with tons of humor. A police team goes undercover in a chicken restaurant and things take an unexpected turn when they buy the joint and start business to keep a low profile. Very well put together and the characters did a good job.

Rating - 4.5/5 (Highly Recommended)

Have few more Korean movies lined up for the next week.

The Lives of Others - German

An awesome movie, saw it many years ago. Brilliant portrayal of life conditions under the Stasi.

Rating - 5/5

Cook up a Storm - Chinese

The story is kept simple and included many instances into one film - story of a street chef and a Michelin star chef, father-son relationship, various food cultures etc. The best part is the presentation of the food, how they make it and the cinematography (while cooking). That was just brilliant. The story is predictable and nothing new.

Rating - 4.5/5

Agree whole heartedly, Khuda ke liye should be a compulsory watch for everyone, specially in times we are living now. Such a nuanced movie and the Great Naseeruddin Shah just steals the show in the climax.

I saw the Turkish remake and that’s equally good if not better. Such a beautiful little film, absolutely nailed by the actors

Another two of my choices here:
1. Sadece Sen ( Turkish)-Story of an ex boxer in love with a blind girl ... story is not something we have not seen earlier but the treatment of the movie makes it a riveting watch.
2. The Butterfly’s Dream ( Turkish)- Story set in world war 2 and is a wonderful watch.

Both the movies including Miracle in cell no. 7 are available in Netflix.

Watched Parasite a couple of weeks back on Amazon Prime. Didn't find it too impressive. The first half with the scenes of how the poor family gets into the rich household was inventive and humorous.

Overall, how a small time crime caper goes awry theme seemed too James Hadley Chase-ish. Maybe it was the high expectation of an Oscar winner.

Parasite - 3/5.

Like Father, Like Son - Japanese

After seeing some amazing reviews, decided to watch this last weekend. It's a story about a workaholic dude who realize that his 6 year old son is not his biological son. They then meet up with the family with whom his biological son lives. Both families come from different background (something like the families in Parasite). The movie is all about his decision whether to be with his 6 year old son or switch with his biological son.

I expected a lot from the movie but it's not disappointing either. I totally loved the kids in the movie. They acted really well. Found the movie to be a bit slow but it's watchable.

The crew (Braqueurs) - 2015

A French action flick. Fast paced with some good action sequences. No unnecessary drama and the performances appear understated yet genuine. Will rate it higher than the average Hollywood fare
4/5

Plagues of Breslau (2018)

A Polish crime thriller, reminded me of the Stieg Larsson millenium film séries. Fast paced, gripping albeit with a slightly far fetched conclusion. Very visceral and no holds barred.
3/5

Both have graphic imagery, especially the Polish one and viewer discretion is advised. Available on Netflix

Watched a few Korean movies during the lockdown:

1] Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt8119752/

Good thriller/horror movie with some genuine jump-in-chair moments!

2] A Tale of Two Sisters:
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0365376/

Twisted movie. Worth a watch :)

3] Death Bell:
https://www.imdb.com/video/vi1633485337

A mild version of Saw i guess, but nonetheless it was a good movie to watch on a rainy night.

4] The Host:
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0468492/

Very highly rated but i found it a bit funny.

5] Thirst:
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0762073/
Weird movie and had me feeling weird as well!

Other Korean recommendations would be:
Train To Busan and The Wailing.

Although, late to the party, worth mentioning, which, I'm sure most of you would've watched, the highly recommended Das Boot

Shot in 1981, still it's a fantastic thriller to watch even now on NetFlix

Gods - Polish

Synopsis - The early career of cardiac surgeon Zbigniew Religa. Despite harsh reality of the 1980s Poland, he successfully leads a team of doctors to the country's first human heart transplantation.

This picture should say it all.

The Foreign (non-English) Movies thread (no spoilers please)-humansofworldpowerfulportraitphotography17__880.jpg

Loved it. Powerful acting, brilliant BGM, cinematography etc. Very well taken.

Rating - 4.5/5

New Trial - Korean

Synopsis - The film is based on the 2000 "Iksan murder case" where a teenage boy was falsely accused of the murder of a taxi driver and spends ten years in prison.

Very good acting, emotional scenes and a beautifully scripted.

Rating - 4/5

Capernaum, 2018

Watched Capernaum, 2018. It is a Lebanese movie in Arabic. Watched with subtitles. The movie is about a 12 year old, poor boy who sues his parents in court, accusing them of bringing their children to life when they dont have enough means to take care of them.

The movie depicts the extremely sad ways in which the poor survive in Lebanon and the tough life they go through. The film is very moving.
