Re: Do you shop at DMart? Reviews, pros & cons?

The following article gives some great analysis about why DMart is doing so well. The company has very little debt and is razor focused on its business.

Re: Do you shop at DMart? Reviews, pros & cons?

Been to the D-Mart showroom near Electronic City flyover, Bangalore - that was the first and last time I stepped into their shop.

Was getting some rava, we took a kilo of it and then I saw live worms rolling all in its glory. Informed this to a attendant standing by there, his response was even more scary - 'Sir that is what you get for the discounted price we offer'. Kept the cover aside and came out without buying anything, never going back either.

Online delivery works if someone is there at the location (office or home) to collect it. Also, that person has to receive calls (whether in the shower, or at movies, or working out, or in meetings or driving), update the location details and guide the delivery folks to correct destination.
After delivery, have to check the price & quantity and schedule return if wrong item is delivered.

Both BB & Amazon pantry have a minimum order for delivery or for any discount, below which you have to pay for delivery (agreed it costs more or less the fuel for the car). So you will end up adding unnecessary items to cross the minimum limit.

It may not work in all cases.

1. Crowd- As soon as you enter you start with competing other cars to the entry gate, then fight for parking space, then fight for trolley, then stand in queue for dropping bag/luggage, then another queue for security check, then compete for picking essential items such as groceries, then another queue for weighing. After all that turmoil, there is this Billing queue that mimic legendary toll booths. The queue doesn't end there, you got stand again for exit punch, and tussle your vehicle out. I would rather pay extra 100 bucks at a kirana store and save my peace, fuel and time.

2. Spendthrift- You tend to buy what you don't need. There is so much stuff that we often forget the actual items we came to buy, billing was never below 4000.

3. Quality- Be it cloths, toys, blankets or footwear, every pile is mediocre (may even look used). How does it matter, when they happily flash 50% discount and we compete the dig as if it is a gold rush and pick the last pyjama as a world-cup trophy without realizing the pyjama has gone through a thousand hands before it landed on to his. I would rather shop happily at a medium size shop which has neatly maintained racks with hand picked items.
My 2 cents.
Agree 100% to the points given. Some items in D Mart looks to be value for money. However , the minimum cart value , almost is 4000 Rs and we end up buying so much unnecessary things when we go with family.
Lately , D Mart near to me , had kept a peak time information table , which gives us an idea when to visit and when not to visit.Still , I am miffed at the way the billing counters work. Seems like they have an algorithm to close the counters and keep any number of customers waiting in queue.( When it is 3 customers , they will open only 1 counter) I could never get my items billed without being in a queue.

So , the following guidelines I keep about D Mart.

1) Never shop for cloths .
2) No footwear purchase either.
3) Do not pick anything other than what is in the shopping list.
4) Oil , Grains , nuts, pet food, Cosmetics (Shampoo, Body wash , Moisturizers ) , Cleaning materials ( Washing machine fluids, Floor cleaners, toilet cleaners) , can be bought as per the need.
5) Restrict the urge to go and do shopping only once in a month.

Hope this will be helpful to forum users.

Re: Do you shop at DMart? Reviews, pros & cons?

Though I have never shopped from DMART, I thought of sharing my experience as I switched from METRO (similar shop?) to online shopping, and how it has helped me to save money.
I was a regular customer at METRO CASH AND CARRY since they started their operations way back in 2004.Initially the bill amount used to be around 4-5k per visit (always used to visit once in every 5-7 weeks). Finally the bill amount reached 12-14k because of all unnecessary stuff that we used to buy during every visit. Around 2017-18, I thought I need to do something to stop this and hence started comparing the prices with online (mainly BB and Amazon Pantry) and found the prices there to be reasonable with credit card offers. That's when I did the switch and since then, my monthly grocery bill has hovered around 5-6k.

I generally create a list of items that I need before last day of the month. Then I use credit card offers (Citibank - 16% off on min bill of 2500, HDFC & ICICI - 10% off on min bill of 1500). So, the maximum offers that I avail is Rs700 for bill amount of around Rs5500.
Earlier it used to be 20% for Citibank and 15% for HDFC. So, the offers are coming down, but still I find it beneficial, compared to visiting a store.

Lastly, agree that one needs to be available at home to receive the items and also check the items. But they do have various slots to choose from.
And, they don't call me on my mobile as they already know my location.

Re: Do you shop at DMart? Reviews, pros & cons?

Pros:

- Discounted prices

Cons/hates :

- Higher spending (who exits a supermarket with just a loaf of bread though the intent was just that)
- Poor shoulder space, too cramped and crowded for my liking
- Poor parking amenities
- Lack of trust (tagging zips of vanity bags, laptop bags!)
- Unfriendly staff (Usually short staffed)
- Dumping poor quality Chinese items at cheap price, unreliable

Re: Do you shop at DMart? Reviews, pros & cons?

A new D-Mart started near Sarjapura village in Bangalore outskirts. Its safe to say that with in a few days almost all of the residents have taken to D-Mart. A few things that work at D-Mart.

+ Ve

1. You can get almost everything under the sun except for vegetables and fruits.

2. Items are priced reasonably cheaper than the Big Bazaars / Local Super Markets.

3. The store layout is clean and intuitive.

4. Ample parking space for cars both at grounds level and basement parking.

- Ve

1. Store is super busy. Its like being in a village fair. some times our carts bump into people and vice versa.

2. Its turns into a family destination every weekend, where all 3 or 4 members of the family can be seen purchasing. Its looks like people have turned D-Mart into a family outing

3. Returns process is a royal pain. I tried returning a few clothes and it took like forever to process the return.

Re: Do you shop at DMart? Reviews, pros & cons?

I went a couple of times to DMart and I avoid it because:
  • Crowd
  • Parking Woes
  • Cheap Chinese Stuff(That don't last long)
    • I believe in the concept of buying Good Quality items though they have a upfront high cost than buying multiple low quality cheaper things. I strongly believe that this helps environment.
  • Fire Hazard & next-to-nil/questionable Evacuation Capacity
    • Even the stair cases are stowed with goods
  • I didn't even see any windows that can be used to jump off the building in case of a Fire (at least in Hyderabad)
  • I can get similar prices in Amazon/More Megastore/Metro with better and safe Infra.

Re: Do you shop at DMart? Reviews, pros & cons?

This link below has a good information on why DMart is flourishing.

https://www.businesstoday.in/current...6TOj3sp5R8QTkI

Some excerpts worth noting:

"Not only does DMart offer its customers discounts in the region of 6-7 per cent round the year, its procurement costs are also significantly lower than its peers, the benefits of which it passes on to the consumers. Here again, it is the company's eye for perfection that has come in handy. DMart is known for paying its suppliers almost immediately as opposed to other retailers who take anywhere between a month to month-and-half to pay off their suppliers. The suppliers (mostly FMCG companies) don't mind offering extra margins as they get paid immediately and a value conscious Indian consumer who loves discounts doesn't have a reason not to frequent DMart month-on-month."

"DMart is also fastidious about its inventory turnover time. It makes sure it doesn't exceed over 30 days as opposed to its competitors which mostly have a turnaround time of 70 days. They also have a wider array of SKUs. The DMart shelves only have leading brands and their own private brands, which enable a faster turnaround"

Re: Do you shop at DMart? Reviews, pros & cons?

There is one D-Mart in Electronic City, which I try to avoid because of limited parking space and the metro work happening in front of it. Another reason is that this D-Mart has a multi-storied building, which I find inconvenient to navigate through.

I prefer to go to the D-Mart in Bommasandra, which is a good 10 km further away. This D-Mart has ample covered parking space for 4-wheelers and has everything on the same floor, hence it is easier to navigate through.

It is like a mini-picnic which has something interesting for every member of the family. I get to go on a longish drive on a smooth national highway, my wife gets the pleasure of shopping and the kid gets to buy some goodies like biscuits, chips, cakes etc.

I have to admit that the offers are unbeatable, even on branded items. We sometimes do end up buying things we never needed.

I mostly buy cosmetics, toiletries and branded packaged food items from D-Mart. The prices are always the best there.

My algorithm is well-defined:
1. Visit D-mart no more than once a month
2. Never visit D-mart in the first week of the month
3. Visit D-mart after having lunch
4. Wear comfortable footwear while visiting D-mart
5. Always carry a shopping list and shop accordingly
6. Only buy branded stuff, avoid products in D-mart packing

My primary mode of grocery shopping is BigBasket. I generally place an order every month on BigBasket, which provides good quality products, convenience of home delivery in well defined time slots, good discounts and further offers when using certain mode of payments.

Like others mentioned, D-mart provides that sense of achievement, which BigBasket, Amazon and Flipkart can never provide.

Re: Do you shop at DMart? Reviews, pros & cons?

Even the shares of D-Mart are doing well.

Shares of D-Mart operator Avenue Supermarts gained nearly 3 percent intraday on February 13 after a media report indicated that an offer for sale issue is likely to open later this week.

Quote:
The stock has been on buyers' radar amid strong response from investors for its QIP issue, rallying 30 percent in last 15 days. In fact, it turned multibagger in last nine months by showing 100 percent return. It was quoting at Rs 2,504, up Rs 22.40, or 0.90 percent on the BSE at 1134 hours IST.

The OFS is likely to open for institutions & HNIs on February 14 and for retail on February 17, the report said.

Re: Do you shop at DMart? Reviews, pros & cons?

There was a D-Mart next to IIM Indore (My Alma Mater) and it was literally a God sent for all of us. We used to shop extensively there in order to save ourselves from the hostel food !

They have adopted a policy of setting themselves on the lines of Walmart (much like the success model followed by Indigo on the lines of Southwest) i.e. a standalone mega store with all imaginable items under a warehouse like space.

They play on economies of scale to offer such discounts across their product range. If they expand aggressively yet in a well researched and thought out manner, they have a huge potential.

Re: Do you shop at DMart? Reviews, pros & cons?

I don't go to DMart due to the crazy crowds. My wife goes occasionally. One very interesting thing is the price of some of the stuff you get. INR 100 can get you a number of items you would think unimaginable to get. Recently we got a full 6 tea cup and saucer set for 90 bucks. Did not look or feel cheap at all.

Re: Do you shop at DMart? Reviews, pros & cons?

The land that is obsessed with "Kitna deti hai", simply flock to D-mart because " Kitna batchti hai",

Top three reasons for D-marts success story are -

1) Discount
2) Discount
3) Discount

D-mart must be a B-school case to analyse how business explodes if we advertise discounts consistently and honestly. No conditions apply business, just honest abdul's discount.

We have been Dmart fans since last 4-5 years.I am lucky to work in shifts so i always go to Dmart on weekdays during morning time.
I always take Nano to DMart for obvious reasons.

They now start very early at 8am here in Pune so that really helps, no rush at all. You end up saving quite a lot and people do buy in heaps and bounds.

Cons : Clothes sold there look and feel cheap.Toys section also has cheap toys but i always go since they sell RMZ scale models and i am curious to see any new additions.

Yes and for us bhpians parking can get really really crazy on weekends, parking a 2 wheeler is big challenge so simply avoid it on weekends.
Other favourite day is start of month weekends, maybe weekend guys should try last weekend of month.
