Cyclone Nisarga headed toward Maharashtra & Gujarat

"A Possible Cyclonic Storm (if formed will be named 'Nisarga' ) is forming over the Eastcentral ARABIAN SEA & current models show that the system is likely to give heavy rainfall and stormy weather for Konkan Coast & likely to make a landfall on the western coast of India around Mid week."

One weather update forum has reported the above quoted text. Is this true or these are just rumours?

It is very real. The cyclonic circulation is predicted to intensify and move parallel to the coast up and cross anywhere between Mumbai to GJ.

Something is indeed brewing in the Arabian Sea.

The low-pressure area developing over the Arabian sea is likely to intensify into a severe cyclone and cross the north Maharashtra and south Gujarat coasts on June 3, the India Meteorological Department said today. The cyclone will have an impact on state capital Mumbai when it cross the Maharashtra, it said.
"The Low-pressure area intensified into a depression today morning. To intensify into a Cyclonic Storm and cross North Maharastra and South Gujarat coast during 3rd June evening/night," IMD tweeted.

Here in north Kerala, it been very cloudy since yesterday afternoon. It rained heavily last night along with severe thunder. Even now, the sky is dark. My house is about 200 meters from the beach, so its always windy, but the winds are stronger than usual now. This is the view outside my home right now.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD), on May 31, issued a red-colour coded warning to coastal Maharashtra and Gujarat for June 4 in view of a cyclonic storm, named 'Nisarga', in the Arabian Sea.
The system will bring strong winds and heavy to very heavy rainfall to coastal Maharashtra and Gujarat.
The IMD has issued an orange-colour coded warning to Kerala, coastal Karnataka, Goa and coastal Maharashtra for June 1. The same warning applies to coastal Maharashtra and Goa for June 2.

It would be a disaster if it were to strike Mumbai. The city is already badly affected by the pandemic. Reminds me of the Malayalam saying "Idi vettiyone paambu kadichu" i.e snake bites a man hit by lightning!

Edit: Just as I posted this, saw a flash of lightning and it started to rain.

Cyclone Nisarga headed toward Maharashtra & Gujarat

Thanks to ChiragM for the reminder! Mumbai BHPians, if your parking is in a flood-sensitive area, move your cars to a safer spot. I moved all my rides to a friend's place, except for the Jeep .

Quote:
Less than two weeks after a powerful cyclone passed through West Bengal on its way to Bangladesh, India is bracing to face another cyclone, this time on its western coast. In strength and intensity, this would be much weaker than Cyclone Amphan that struck on May 20. In fact, it is not even a full-fledged cyclone right now, just a ‘depression’ that is likely to intensify into a ‘deep depression’ by Tuesday morning, and eventually into a cyclone, after which it would be called Nisarga.

Where is it headed?

It is headed towards the coastline of north Maharashtra and south Gujarat. It is likely to hit the coastline on Wednesday, between Harihareshwar in Raigad district, just south of Mumbai, and Daman, just below Gujarat coast. By that time, it is likely to evolve into a Severe Cyclonic Storm, which, roughly stated, is of strength 2 on a 1-to-5 of strength of cyclones that arise in the Indian Ocean.

Re: India braces for 'super cyclone' Amphan

Looks like Nisarga has already hit the Maha coast. It is raining in Pune. Too many cyclones from the monsoon past year!

Re: Cyclone Nisarga headed toward Maharashtra & Gujarat

The Nisarga cyclone will be hitting the west coast. The Indian Meteorological Department has shared the details in their tweet.

This is the current screenshot from FlightRadar24.

Mumbai is going to get the maximum velocity winds with 100-110kmph and the storm surge also passes across Mumbai. This would lead to submerging of low lying areas. Stay safe Mumbaikars.

Re: Cyclone Nisarga headed toward Maharashtra & Gujarat

The IMD Mumbai Doppler Radar was down sometime yesterday, thankfully it seems to be working again!

Also, please do charge all your essentials tonight.

Meanwhile, Mumbai Police has issued an order prohibiting movement of people on beaches and seaside promenades in the city in view of the Cyclone threat.

Other than strong winds for an hour and some rainfall, the situation was alright. Nothing like what Kolkata suffered. Received a funny meme that sums up 3rd June in Bombay:

A few trees did uproot here in / around our colony - so it was definitely slightly above ordinary; but nothing compared to what hit our eastern coast.

But see the difference in media coverage for both events.
