Just so this gets read in context, the opposition asked for a delay so they could campaign properly, not something the incumbent decided by & for themselves.

Relevant snippets from the same article:

The opposition National Party has argued the election should be delayed as restrictions on campaigning mean Ms Ardern had an unfair advantage.
Quote:
"This decision gives all parties time over the next nine weeks to campaign and the Electoral Commission enough time to ensure an election can go ahead," Ms Ardern said, adding that she had "absolutely no intention" of allowing any further delays to the vote.

Tells you how democracy is perceived in that supposedly small country. I don't know the political scenario in that country but whatever little I could make of Jacinda Ardern, she should be a favorite for the next term. To see that no unfair advantage is taken by either, such decisions in times of Pandemic is indeed praiseworthy and when such fairness and pragmatism is clearly absent in the world's largest democracy.

A sea of people, many of whom were not wearing masks, turned out in Aotea Square around midday and held signs protesting against the Covid-19 lockdown, 5G, vaccines, the New Zealand government and the TPPA.
