Re: How the internet & social media create instant celebrities

Most people on the internet & social media will do just about anything to get short lived fame. Instant Gratification has become a way of life. My policy is just to ignore it and move on.

There are a few genuinely talented artists who use their skills and make it big. Such people are few and far between though.

Seems like he has been presented with an award from the local Toyota dealership for "extraordinary parking skills"!

Re: How the internet & social media create instant celebrities

I think social media users are also always looking for the next "someone" who they can make famous. With more than 70k followers gained over 2-3 years, a close relative of mine is an upcoming Instagram influencer. I can understand why people may want to follow his feed. He sometimes posts stories including me and tags me in those. I get more than 20-30 follow requests on those particular days from random people. I can't understand why, as I have a private account and have made exactly 0 posts on Instagram so far. I think people are expecting me to post something worthwhile and become famous one of these days

Re: How the internet & social media create instant celebrities

Today accidently clicked on some news link which was about Tiktok's first family. Not understanding what that meant, I read the article only to see a name Charli D’Amelio. Who is that... I've never heard that name.

So I googled her name, only to find out she is just 17 and has 123 million followers around the world. She had a 10 year career as competitive dancer and finally at the ripe old age of 15, she turned to social media and became the biggest star on TikTok.

She is also on Youtube with nearly 96 lakhs subscribers. I clicked on couple of videos and couldn't understand why she is famous. I am over 3 times older than her, so I don't understand what makes her so appealing to her fans.

I wonder how long this will last. Will her fans move on once she gets older, say in 5 years...

Unless an influencer continually reinvents themselves very quickly and very smartly - aided by a team of PR and social media managers - their stardom tends to be very short-lived. But the ones that can, often go the distance. I doubt anyone lasts for several years together though. Also, these days there's a wide range of influencers - spread across thousands / millions / multi-millions of followers.

Very sadly, beyond a certain point, this tends to be difficult without sexualising themselves.

The generation-gap prevents me from completely understanding how these channels become famous too, but from a purely business side of things- I guess a couple of years is enough to make money? Both for the celebrity and for the hosting site. Perhaps the hosting site doesn't make an overall profit yet, but they need the clicks to drive up ad rates, for basic survival. All that matters is how many followers and how many clicks. A year of that is more than enough.

"Famous for being famous" is not a new concept. And as for short-lived acts- that's been around for a long time. All those boy/girl-bands, right from the 80s, professionally assembled, selected for looks rather than music talent, a couple of albums/hit songs written and scored by other professionals, lip-sync concerts and then disband. The record label and most fans move on to the next new band.

This is the same concept on a different medium. And quite profitable for those that do make it big, the entry barriers and production costs being much, much lower. But I don't think longevity is even a consideration or a part of the plan.
