Record-breaking rainfall sinks Hyderabad

Quote:
32 people have died so far in Telangana, 18 of them in Hyderabad, after incessant rains pounded the city, which recorded its rainiest day in history. It received 324.5 mm of rainfall, erasing the previous record of 241.5 mm, recorded on August 24, 2000. According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), 35 places in the city received more than 21 cm of rainfall — an “all-time record” — inundating 20,540 houses in 122 localities.

Part of the reason for Hyderabad's flooding, which led to the city being cut off from neighbouring Andhra Pradesh (AP) and Karnataka, was the deep depression formed over the Bay of Bengal passed over Telangana, with heavy rains in AP, north Karnataka and south Odisha, leaving behind a trail of destruction. The IMD has issued a warning for extremely heavy rainfall — 20 cm or more — for regions along the west coast, including Maharashtra, Goa, Konkan and coastal Karnataka.

The opening up of 13 of the 17 gates of the Himayat Sagar reservoir that is located on the city’s outskirts to let the excess water flow into the Musi river, that runs through Hyderabad, led to flooding along the river’s banks.

Another major reason for Hyderabad’s floods — they aren’t really uncommon, with the last one occurring just four years back, in 2016 — is the city’s location, in the Deccan region, which has a chaotic drainage pattern, due to the slope being in multiple directions, with the result that water flows in different directions. Moreover, the drainage system is designed to handle only 12 mm of rain per hour. Added to that is poor sewage and waste management, along with encroachments, which have reduced the ‘holding capacity’ of the lakes.

Re: Record-breaking rainfall sinks Hyderabad

Guess this has become pattern with each of our metros / tier 1 cities over the last few years.

The way we planned for it, one can only hope that they pass off quickly with minimal damage. None of the cities seem to be capable of taking damage on the long run. Well again these are force majeure conditions.

Do we even have the bandwidth to plan in such haphazard growth. I remember the 2000 floods that we had when the scenario was equally bad. Fever hospital bridge totally caved in. These scenarios will need lot of commitment from both the government and general public to move forward to a meaningful conclusion. I pray that these won't recur more frequently

Re: Record-breaking rainfall sinks Hyderabad

We simply have to decongest the metro regions (top 10 cities). The major infrastructure investment should be on the next 20-30 upcoming urban agglomerations.

Big cities in India are passé, for the lack of better words. There is simply no point in shoe-horning metro/mass transport etc into the already congested areas and creating burgeoning satellite colonies around the metros.

This is bound to happen in Hyderabad. In the past 5-6 years, lots of lake beds and catchment areas have been encroached. Where else will water flow and collect? People prefer to wipe and dry after the rain rather than to make space for rain.

Re: Record-breaking rainfall sinks Hyderabad

That is truly terrifying to see. Very best wishes to all there.

Have struggled, up to chest-deep through the sewage-infested floodwater of Chennai in 2015, but never faced (in our part of the city) water flowing with that speed. That is so frightening.

All the best to all Hyderabadis.
