The distance from Navi Mumbai airport to Matheran straight line about 13 miles and elevation of Matheran is 2300 feet. Given that take off speed is about 150 miles and below 10 K feet airlines are restricted to 250 knots, they would have about 4 minutes by which time plane would be very safely above Matheran. In case of engine failure, they would have to return to airport and can fly at lower altitude but have enough distance to avoid Matheran,
1) There will be bigger, heavier planes flying out of NMI. A heavy wide body jet bound for East/ South would typically go E/ SE after initial climb, that's when it will overfly the Matheran range.
2) The area surrounding NMI will most certainly develop into an urban clutter, increasing the possibility of birds , not to mention the poor wild birds of Matheran / Karnala region who would be at risk by virtue of airplane movement and the sound/ air pollution for no fault of theirs.
Not to mention the planes taking off or landing in either direction are at risk of birds ( and vice versa) from the surrounding " flamingo zone" near Atal Setu.
I somehow have mixed feelings these days when I see megaprojects like these in the Indian context.

Pretty much all modern airliners have 2500 fpm climb rate in the initial range and with stop speed restricted to 250 knots under 10 K feet, none of these will be a challenge.

On # 2, it won't be worse than what CSIA is today.
