TOKYO, July 8 (Reuters) - Japanese former prime minister Shinzo Abe was shot on Friday while campaigning in the city of Nara, a government spokesman said, with public broadcaster NHK saying he appeared to have been shot from behind by a man with a shotgun.
This is so sad. He is a good man. His Abenomics - Aggressive Economic policy helped Japan a lot.
I hope he recovers from this. The fear is that they are saying there are no vital signs.
Things that have happened in the past will or tend to happen again in one way or another. History repeats and keeps repeating. Wish him speedy recovery, though the shocking fact is that this incident has occured in Japan.
Can somebody point to information as to probable reasons why he was shot at. I don't know if there are any strong factions still prevalent in Japan. I am wondering what motivated the culprit to shoot a successful Ex prime minister.

Nothing concrete as of now.
Could be fringe elements. Japan has both violent left extremists and a highly visible diverse right extremists. Both have a history of violence and attempted assassinations. Who ever it is, fingers crossed. Will have long term repercussions on Japan's politics and the world at large.
Or in a suicide prone society, maybe the most dangerous of all. A random guy who tried to take a shot for the sake of it.

“Police said a 41-year-old man suspected of carrying out the shooting had been arrested. NHK quoted the suspect, Tetsuya Yamagami, as telling police he was dissatisfied with Abe and wanted to kill him.”

If dissatisfaction is the reason to gundown someone so important, then I think what DicKy pointed to is a valid cause:

Update 14:18 IST
Unfortunately ex Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has passed away. RIP Sir.
Cheers
Truly a senseless waste. A good man. RIP.
I never thought Id feel this horrible at hearing this shocking news but I do. His aggressive economic policies were just what Japan needed.
And I have nothing but great respect for Japan, its culture and its people and its ethic.
I am absolutely shattered at this news.

Shocked to hear and RIP, Abe. I have never heard of political assassination or gun culture/shootings in Japan before (of course, in main stream media).
It was widely believed under Abe, Japan will renounce its WW-2 pacifist constitution and move towards its own defense arrangement but I think it never materialized in his lifetime. Given the rise of its huge neighbor, it will be inevitable and he will be remembered for sowing its seeds.
A true great friend of India. It is a terrible loss for both Japan and India.
ご冥福をお祈りいたします (I pray for your soul to rest in peace)
A good leader for Japan and a good friend of India.
Om Shanti!
A man who wanted the good of Japan and the rest of the world alike. God bless his soul.
This is going to trigger a new wave of nationalism among the Japanese.
Gun related crimes are non-existent in Japan due to strict gun regulations for civilians. Even Shinzo's bodyguards and people standing there couldn't believe a gun has been fired mistaking it for a tyre blast or a car backfire maybe until the second shot struck him. His security was caught off-guard although they aggressively chased and caught the assailant instantly.
The suspect used a homemade gun put together using a metal pipe and duct tape.
Very sad news, indeed. :sadface
His role in lifting Japan out of recession was monumental. His unorthodox economic policies AKA Abenomics made major impact on Japan's economy as many believe. This Time published article on Abenomics is a good primer (slightly biased, as US media generally is, IMHO):

Impotently, his friendship towards India was commendable. We truly have lost a great leader!
RIP, Abe San!
Om Shanti !
