There is no issue. Some political parties are so addicted to protests, dharnas and bandh (now conveniently called hartaal). Come to kerala for a glimpse. One would expect them to behave well atleast when they are in power, but naeee, they still do it. In fact they even raised an allegation that CIA funded newspapers and other parties to do a propoganda drive against them.

At least they should have appreciated that Americans use left-hand drive cars

Yes, there's a Nuclear Power Plant at Kalpakkam around 50kms+ from Chennai. And btw India has the 2nd largest reserves of Thorium which is found on the beach sands of TN & Kerala (if I remember right). So there is natural radiation found in the beaches but which is not considered harmful.

If not the full group, atleast Nimitz should be accompanied by its supply ship as well as couple of Frigates and a Submarine.
Do aircraft carriers always travel as part of a fleet? And what is a supply ship?

@MC Mayank: Yes, aircraft carriers always travel in battlegroups, which consist of 1 or 2 carriers, and other ships as WhiteKnight has mentioned.

Frigates accompany it for air defence and anti-sub defence, submarines accompany it for anti-sub and anti-ship defence. Apart from this, the supply ships carry food, aviation spares, aviation fuel, and bunker fuel (ship fuel) for non-nuclear escorts (i.e. the carriers and subs are nuclear powered, frigates may not be).

Atleast the US ones do. If you notice the news, two people were addressing the press conference, one is a full blown admiral- Chief of the Battle group, and the other is a Captain of the carrier.
I didn't mention Destroyers, as on friendlt visits as these, they may not accompany the carrier.

@arunphilip, thank you for chipping in

Got a new twist to the story from Karan Thapar's interview of Mr Raja from CPM in IBN.

He says Nimitz was involved in pressurising Iran for Nuclear deterrence and Iraq war and hence it is "blood stained". We are friendly with Iran and hence this ship now coming to India in the guise of peaceful mission cannot be "allowed". This point he raised after Karan cut him into pieces for their usual "Nuclear power/armed argument" he was making.

aaah, these Communist jokers are concerned about every country but India.
If Nimitz is blood stained then all the communists should be banished from India because the no disease or war killed more people than communism did.

FYI, the Queen Mary II and the Freedom of the Seas are 50% bigger.

I'm sure you've heard this before: guns don't kill people, people do.

But those are passenger ships. And queen mary has retired long back even before i was born. it is currently a hotel. RMS Queen Elizabeth was a lot bigger than the Queen Mary, but was scrapped in 1975.

Length
1. Freedom of the seas (biggest passenger vessel) : 338.77M
-----do----- : Overall (between perpendiculars) :303.21
2. USS Nimitz (Navy Super Carrier) : 333 m, Water line - 317m

P.S. I dont have that much knowledge about ships, i just googled it & got these info from the wikipedia. Overall, it seems one of the biggest ships in the world has anchored near our coast.
