Now that I think about it, I do admit I like seeing the "thanks" on my team-bhp posts go up. Well, this post is borderline off-topic, so let me see how that pans out.

And all that data put through the amazingly sophisticated algos these companies have developed, is very valuable to advertising. And it works.
Sometimes I get creepy ads, but I also feel sometimes they're dumb.

Like for example, I never see ads for anything related to cars. Don't know why they haven't picked up on that yet.

And there have been times when I saw ads in languages I don't even speak (I did not even understand what the language was). And I wasn't behind a VPN.

In fact, I have almost never seen an ad for a product/category that I might be interested in.

I guess by me posting this here, some algorithm somewhere will update their profile about me and I might see more car ads.

So, algorithm, if you're crawling this, let me state explicitly: I'm not interested in soap, glasses, ghee etc. If you're going to show me ads, show me cars, books, computers, aircrafts etc.

I deleted my LinkedIn profile last year. Except for reels and vulgarity, it has everything that you can find on X, Reddit, or Instagram. People are literally posting their vacation pictures with motivational quotes. I mean, really?

re: How LinkedIn has changed | Has your LinkedIn usage increased?

Many have already mentioned here, that LinkedIn has become just another social media website, and can't be called a professional networking site anymore.

In addition, another thing that irritates me is, there is no real professional contribution of the person creating post. And yet they keep calling themselves influencer/creator/leader, and attract followers in kilos. Some such examples:

People put some achievement/effort of some random person, who's not present on the network and call themselves influencer - well boy, what's your contribution?

Then there are ones, who get some technology demonstration videos, post them with tag, "Who wants it?". They are calling themselves creators - man, are you building or selling it? Again, what's your contribution?

Then some find some old buried videos of yesteryear's business acumen, posting them with text that says the same thing as in video. They call themselves a leader. Again, ...?

And the LinkedIn algorithm is such that even if you don't follow such people, someone in your network is going to react to the post and you feed will be full of all this crap.

re: How LinkedIn has changed | Has your LinkedIn usage increased?

I am on linkedin all day, every day. It is indispensable in my line of work and a great way to stay in people's mind even if you aren't actually in touch (through liking or commenting on their posts for example) .

That said, I couldn't agree more with the rest of folks about how Linkedin has become total junk. Since team-bhp gives me the cushion of anonymity, I will go ahead and state that I hate those 20-30 yr olds 'trying to be influencers' typing absolute filth in the name of posts. Even worse is another 100 of them copying the original posts and sharing it as theirs!

The second gang is of those dimwits sharing political posts on a daily basis and somehow connecting and attributing every achievement by anyone in the country to a leader they revere.

Linkedin is becoming an unnecessary yet unavoidable stress in my life!

Re: How LinkedIn has changed | Has your LinkedIn usage increased?

LinkedIN is yet another vanity social media platform.
The one where everyone is out to demonstrate that he/she is more workaholic than Elon Musk and how much they are enjoying their "hustles".

I mostly use it to connect/stay in touch and find background about potential people I am about to meet.

Re: How LinkedIn has changed | Has your LinkedIn usage increased?

I don't use Linkedin the way I used to use it earlier mainly because of the decrease in useful content for me. The complete feed gets clogged up with unwanted and unrelated information. I use it to get a little background information before I have to have a professional interaction with anyone.

I think most of us seem to agree that linkedin has also gone to the dogs.

I prefer twitter or X most - specially useful in Stock investing research.

Re: How LinkedIn has changed | Has your LinkedIn usage increased?

I am yet to take my old LinkedIn account seriously. Have been getting mails saying "x" number of people (mails don't classify ladies or gents) viewed my profile. After going through the OP and the thread I feel like doing some viewing of the LinkedIn page.

This Bloomberg review para can be illustrated with facts.

Quote:
Facebook is for learning too much about an acquaintance from college. And LinkedIn is for updating the obligatory professional profile when you’re looking for a job, then receiving constant emails prompting you to congratulate someone on their “work anniversary.”
- Facebook is also the page where we greet one another sometimes many times a day.
-Travellers take pride is posting maps showing they're travelling for work or to some exotic location.
- Those with gardens post the floral beauty of their microcosm of nature. Also, its not necessary to have your own garden. One can post lovely flora from anywhere on the earth.
- Spouse's, children's, family members' or anyone who is liked is greeted on their birthdays and/or special days or for their achievements.
- Many more posts that one can think of, but posts related to cars and automobiles are mostly liked by enthusuasts and rarely by others. Many ignore such posts saying this fella is off his head. So while car photos could fetch you dozens of thanks here, the same could get just one or two likes on Facebook.
-A facet of Facebook that was revealed to me after 12 years last month is that they are highly Anti- Nazi. Anything even remotely connected to Nazis or their Chieftian is posted on FB earns an infraction instantly. I had just posted a VW Beetle photo with the Chieftian at the wheel from 1938. He was surrounded by his yesmen on uniform who were jubilant upon seeing their very own Fuehrer at the wheel of the first ever example of this historical people's car. This image was deleted and for a month I was not allowed to post any videos or advertisements. I have rarely posted videos and nil advertisements so this hardly meant anything to me. I am though not sure what this infraction meant but since its all over for the better, my take on this Hitler photo is just a one liner. Facts and facts and the Beetle was his brainchild that all know and posting such a factual photo does not mean I am propagating Nazism in any way. In fact, it's for me the most hated phase of modern history replete with persecution, suffering, gory killing and more. But posting such stuff now is like showing a red rag to the FB bull.

Lastly, a retired person was asked how he spends time. He said he has become a writer and right after breakfast he starts writing. When asked where and what he writes, he said I write on Facebook. I wish them good morning, greet them on birthdays, compliment them on their achievements, see the dishes they are preparing or eating commenting "yummy". There are plenty of stuff to write about there. He summarised "That's what the writer in me does."

- LinkedIn has gone beyond just publishing your resume online.

- Microsoft bought LinkedIn for $26 billion. Last year, LinkedIn's revenue rose to $15 billion. THREE times higher than 5 years ago.

Nice thread. But, I agree with Speedmiester.

Linkedin used to be the only professional social media platform on the internet but, unfortunately, it has now become a glorified Facebook/Instagram where people post "unwanted" posts. In fact the feeds are filled with unwarranted posts and it's difficult to dig the good ones out of that maze.

I find maybe 1/10 posts good or relevant to professional learning or betterment of our corporate lifestyle.

1. Selfie of their first day at work with company logo behind (which gets 40K likes).

2. Moaning about their job loss and pleading for help and share their posts (Guaranteed 50K likes).

3. Posting about unrelated items like a "political event" or "Chandrayaan 3 success" etc.

4. Pictures of folks dining/partying at corporate events. Some even post videos of them dancing at these events.

Recent example of party by ISRO posted by some random guy.

It got 50K likes. While it's an exemplary feat is this required to be posted on LI?

Linkedin has completely lost its purpose and I believe I contribute also to its losing its way as some part of whatever happens on Linkedin- I contribute to it via.my teams as I work with them professionally.

But, hey I never tell that to my customers on their face as my motive is totally different.

Re: How LinkedIn has changed | Has your LinkedIn usage increased?

Today mobile phones and social media are the evil.

A decade ago, that was video games.

A few decades ago, it was the television.

Am sure, the radio too was on the dock once.

In my childhood there was an "uncle" who wouldn't buy a television at home because "it will spoil the kids".

All the above were entertainment of the corresponding generation, but they were also windows to the world.

And to quote the unknown, Time you enjoy wasting is not wasted time.

Re: How LinkedIn has changed | Has your LinkedIn usage increased?

Staying connected to ex colleagues, and the network made sense at one point in time. These days I only respond to private/direct messages from ex colleagues/colleagues asking about job opportunities, or queries from recruiters. I do not dare look at the feed.

Also, there is a reason we have a Reddit sub called LinkedInLunatics. Some humans have gone bonkers. Especially a few who have climbed up the ladder, and surrounded themselves with yes men/women. Nobody has the courage to say "the emperor has no clothes" and its gone too far.

That can be one way to justify staying lazy.

Re: How LinkedIn has changed | Has your LinkedIn usage increased?

My linkedin is very boring. So I get my fix from reddit''

https://www.reddit.com/r/LinkedInLunatics/

Its a subreddit

"A subreddit for insufferable LinkedIn content" as per description.

The gems I find there are not on my feed, some examples

I have to disagree with the OP itself, twitter/X is awesome now, LinkedIn remains cringe. It's a meme generator and that subscription is the biggest waste of money I've spent online.

Never used LinkedIn. Actually I'm not aware of its uses too.
Created a profile for the sake of it, but never utilised it. Somehow I didn't get the hang of it at all. All the jobs I got were through references of known people.

Re: How LinkedIn has changed | Has your LinkedIn usage increased?

Had an active linkedin account, not much help to be honest. Post quitting my corporate role, deleted the linkedin account. Cousin has one, he did mention its becoming more of an instagram now, where people post stuff on collab basis.
Glad I got rid of mine.
