I assume this screenshot is from a Samsung phone? If so, this is from service provider called Hiya which comes integrated on Samsung phones. It is not from Airtel.

Re: Lost money to a very convincing scam online | Fraudsters posing as Fedex

Whenever I receive such calls, I listen to them, dig deeper and then I give better 'peace of mind' to the caller.

Sometimes, When time permits, I become friend to them also and ask about personal questions, like:

- where did you learn to speak English?
- what qualification do you have?
- how much you earn? etc.

Not sure, how educated people fall in such simple and unconvincing scams over call.

Nowadays, there is another scam calls are coming, calling from TRAI, your phone number is involved in illegal activities, it will be disconnected in next 2 hours or so.

In this scam calls, I introduce myself as 'Secretary in TRAI' office.

Haven't Lost money .... Yet. But ....

I was surprised to receive a message from TX-CRIFHM yesterday:

Quote:
Your CRIF Credit Report MUTH241003CRxxxxxxxx is generated through MUTHOOT MICROFIN LTD on 04-10-2024 .....
The thing is, I had not initiated this! In fact I've never even dealt with MUTHOOT MICROFIN LTD ever in my life.

The day before I had received some message from I think MUTHxxxx which was in some South-Indian script that I couldn't even read. So I deleted that as spam. And so, now can't post that here to find out what it was about.

So, what should I do now with the above information out of the blue? How could any company even generate my Credit Report without ever being in touch with me and without my explicit autorization? Do I need to worry?

Thanks.

Re: Lost money to a very convincing scam online | Fraudsters posing as Fedex

Just got a Fedex scam call from "+91 9750664641". Neither Airltel nor Samsung/Hiya tagged it as a "suspected scam". I have reported the call. Hope it gets tagged asap.

Re: Lost money to a very convincing scam online | Fraudsters posing as Fedex

I'm shocked to see that inspite of so many people and AI technology tagging numbers as fraud/spam, how easily the scammers are able to change numbers and continue to call from different numbers! That too from mobile numbers, which I suppose, would need some sort of KYC to activate. If a common man wants to procure a new sim, he/she needs to submit proper documents and wait for activation.

Are telecom companies representatives hand in gloves with the scammers and helping them to bypass the process? Or is it so easy to obtain new numbers at such large scale?

Two of my friends fell prey to this and lost a lot of money. When they went to cyber crime police station, they met multiple people who were victims to fraud. Despite all the complaints, court orders etc. seems that the chances of recovering the money is close to 0. The numbers are generated and will never be the same - so spam recognition will not work.

Investigators trying to trace the callers met with dead end when the trail went cold with numbers originating in South East Asian countries.

There are also other sort of frauds going on as the below article mentions.

What's the use of us reporting or tagging a number if scammers have ability to generate random numbers at will, which our agencies can't trace

I used to feel good after reporting a number but now it looks like a futile exercise with no apparent benefit of reducing scam calls

The bigger issue is this can instill a false sense of security in the subscribers.

Seems like a failed attempt. Or maybe the effort behind the service was only undertaken for a limited time period around this public launch. Or maybe the spammers have found some loophole to get around this service.

Saw the "suspected spam" notification for spam calls around last week; but zero notifications so far this week. Just got a regular spam call; I could recognize from the area code of the number, that it was spam but Airtel couldn't.

Re: Lost money to a very convincing scam online | Fraudsters posing as Fedex

I have my reservations about the efficacy of Airtel's Suspected Spam marking.

Delivery calls from DTDC and Blue Dart (important packages too) we're labelled as Suspected Spam. But the usual spam calls from Bajaj Finance, Star Health, Metropolis etc. (do you need a loan/insurance/blood test?) all came through without being identified as Spam.
