Internships in the Car Industry

Hello fellow BHPians,

I’m a final-year college student pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from a reputed college in Mumbai. As part of our curriculum, we have to undergo a technical internship in the final semester of our course. With one manufacturing and one design internship under my belt, and let's face it, being a BHPian, it’s no surprise that I want to gain some work experience in the automotive industry. Furthermore, with me heading off to Germany next year to earn a Master's degree in the same field, mind agreed with the heart.

Upon checking out the companies that were recruiting interns directly through our college, I was a bit disappointed to see none of them were from the automotive industry. Hence, I thought of applying independently.

This is where I hit a massive stumbling block. Although some companies have email addresses available on their website to apply for a job, I did not come across any resources for students looking for internships. Moreover, websites such as Indeed and LinkedIn don’t have many leads on vacancies for this particular role either.

With the growing number of young petrolheads in this forum, it would be of great help to all of us if people in this industry or someone with leads could provide some guidance on how to land an internship or similar roles in an automotive company.

I'm from a mechanical engineering background too. Are you interested in experiencing the service sector, if so give your application to service centres nearby. My friends in Kerala had been to authorised service centres and KSRTC workshops for their internships. Also some had been to manufacturing/assembling plants like KAL and KAMCO etc. I recommend you to personally visit places like these and give the application in person, generally they don't reply to emails like these. Also, if possible, get a letter from the head of your institution recommending you for the internship, get this letter with letter head of the institution. Wishing you all the best.

Re: Internships in the Car Industry

Rather than emails and so on please use the trusted and conventional snail mail. Please get your CV checked by a senior professional and with hard copies of your testimonials and achievements, mail these by speed post to the company Hqs at their postal address. Please address the covering letter in a polite language, (enclosing your CV and copies of your testimonials) to the Chairman/CEO of the company by name. He can be addressed as "Respected Sir". Please select the companies and send such requests to them all. The final choice is yours.

You will get a faster response. All the best for a bright future.

Re: Internships in the Car Industry

Thanks for starting this thread,

I'm pursuing mechanical engineering from one of the universities in Hubli and in the seventh semester currently. According to the curriculum of our university we are required to do an internship for the whole 8th semester. I live in Dharwad, so I approached the TATA manufacturing facilities here, but the response is not positive. I want to make good usage of this opportunity to get exposure in the field of automobiles. Now, I'm thinking to approach dealerships to seek an internship. Will this be okay, or valued as a good internship experience in the future. I would love to work on vehicles. Just needed suggestions from members who have traversed this path earlier.
