Re: How has your social media usage changed in the last 3 - 5 years?

It was nice to read through the interesting thought processes, let me share mine in the order of preference :

Team-BHP : My go-to social site these days. I spend a considerable amount of time here, and the content here has been of great help to me in my day-day life. It's mad fun to devour threads, news and the subsequent comments, arguments and debates associated with those. And though I'm yet to meet any fellow BHPians in the flesh(I make it a point to spot BHPian automobiles while I'm on the road), I feel a sense of kinship and camaraderie here, and dare I say that I enjoy more of the company of the fellow petrol heads here than the remainder of the crowd out there!

Digit / Notebook Check / GSM Arena / Verge / Anandtech : My go-to sites for consuming tech related content. Anandtech in particular, if one wants to do a deep dive.

Youtube : My go-to place for consuming audio-visual content. As long as one doesn't fall for the Shorts or their targeted algorithmic suggestions, you are good(though once in a blue moon, I do find some terrific suggestions). The content repository is detailed exhaustive, I primarily use it for consuming automobile and tech related content.

Instagram : Not a particular fan of this due to my unhealthy addiction towards reels(though you will stumble across some pretty hilarious / amazing creative content). I use it mainly for uploading posts related to travel, food and these days, togetherness(a denial on this means the trigger up of a full scale war with the home ministry :P, which I do not wish to).

Facebook : Used to be an ardent user of this platform, but as time passed by, I saw the platform losing its heading, the algorithms more aggressive and targeted, and the content becoming shallow, volatile, baseless and senseless, and worse, the impact it was having on my mental health. Deleted it from my phone, not using it anymore.

Slowly : A hidden gem which I discovered during Covid days. The app takes upon the concept of pen friends and has done a beautiful integration onto the current social media landscape. You get to affix stamps and write letters to strangers from all parts of the world without revealing your identity. The app takes the concept quite seriously, for example, the letters will take time to reach depending on how far your pen friend is or you can't 'unsend' the letters once posted through. And because of that, it will make you sit up and think before acting on, which is carefully crafting the content for a letter here, and with that you will find the beauty and depth of this long lost art amongst the sea of IMs.

Hope this helps, cheers!

Re: How has your social media usage changed in the last 3 - 5 years?

Here's my update

Facebook : Around once a month if there is some urge to see some update from relative or friend. Else not interested.

LinkedIn : I have account but I hardly go there. I am not actively searching career change and no longer have interest in what others are changing.

WhatsApp : Yes. Close contacts (friends, relatives etc) are in loop through WhatsApp only.

Instagram : Don't have account

Twitter: Once a week for 10 minutes to see what's trending. It has become a slugfest

Team BHP : Yes, since past couple of months. Going through vehicle reviews and other interesting threads keeps me informed.

YouTube: Twice a week. Not a social media but some videos do catch attention depending on the recent interests.

Re: How has your social media usage changed in the last 3 - 5 years?

Very happy to say, I'm out of almost all social media except TBhp {if it's considered as a social media platform}, perhaps once a week Linkedin for no more than an hour {yes per week}. WhatsApp, if its considered to be social media, only for checking messages from known contacts & getting rid off all the forwarded messages. Television, news channels, movies?Almost none or I can say about 2 hours per week.

Thanks to one of the esteemed moderator in this forum who helped me reinvent my life.

Why very happy? Because, I've plenty of time to learn academically, spiritually, improvise physical & meantal health, spend a lot of time with family, assist children with their school & education, help them shape their plans for future, finish work ahead of schedule without having to postpone or delay with anything & everything. Suddenly there seems to be time for doing everything.

Most importantly - Brain & Heart works in tandem rather one trying to control one another

Re: How has your social media usage changed in the last 3 - 5 years?

Social Media platforms have both good and bad sides and it depends on how we utilize them. Here is my usage of some of the popular SM platforms

Twitter/X: This is the only platform I am quite active on. I will be forever indebted for the content I get in health/nutrition space which has transformed my life for good(weight loss, fitness, metabolic health and nutrition knowledge).

Team-BHP: I am also quite addicted to the content here especially in Travelogues and Route/Travel Queries section. I check this section every single day and the updates we get here are really helpful. Special mention for 'Fat to Fit' thread by @graaja sir. It has helped me immensely.

YouTube: Again I watch mostly the content related to fitness and nutrition and occasionally for comic relief.

LinkedIn: I do have an account but inactive.

Facebook: Deactivated many years ago.

Instagram: Occasionally for comic relief.

WhatsApp: Only for personal connects with family and friends.

Re: How has your social media usage changed in the last 3 - 5 years?

Facebook last updated six years back, promised to remove the FB app from mobile while buying new one six years ago, still holding.

LinkedIn Most active, browse through and yet find some posts interesting. Rarely post.

Instagram I guess my account has been deleted due to non-usage

Twitter : Never created account and I guess never will

WhatsApp : Active but it's more of a messenger than social media account, I never post status on WhatsApp

Never really comfortable with sharing details on social media which not so long back were considered private details worth of a private diary or album.

I have seen one person losing job (eventually) when the person claimed to be bed ridden due to dengue but her friend posted party pictures on FB during the same time and were reported to HR.

Re: How has your social media usage changed in the last 3 - 5 years?

Whatsapp: For messaging people and for important communication such as class groups (I'm a student).
Instagram: Only for messaging a few friends and people.
Snapchat: Hate it, it's just a fancy camera app.
YouTube: Very useful for entertainment, studies, news etc.
LinkedIn: I only use it for a few certifications and for building a network.
Reddit: It can be very useful as well as distracting sometimes.
Team BHP: I open at least 5 to 6 times a day.
Twitter is filled with a bunch of time-pass people.
Telegram: It is useful for news and messaging people, way better than WA and has more privacy.

Re: How has your social media usage changed in the last 3 - 5 years?

Facebook: Hate the UI, never used it
Instagram: No account created
X: Relatively heavier usage and has sadly become the main source of news and use the 'bookmark' feature quite a bit for retrieving info and listen to some selected Spaces conversation
YouTube: Minimal for some food, travel related videos
LinkedIn: Rarely used, its a useless app IMHO
Team-BHP: At least once daily
WhatsApp: Dont check during 'focused' office timings, a necessary evil for all things in my family and friends circle

Pinterest is a very powerful tool to find ideas/inspirations if you know how to use it. It basically lets you 'pin' images on 'boards' just like you bookmark links on your browser(pin) and arrange them in folders(board). Unlike search engines which crawl through webpages to look for content, Pinterest relies on users creating boards and pins to identify and show content. So if an image on a webpage does not have enough metadata to categorize the image, search engines won't show that but the moment someone pins this image to a board, Pinterest gets a fresh content.

To begin with, you need to tell pinterest your interest and your your feed reflects what you are looking for. Once you start creating boards and pins, pinterest learns more about your interest and starts delivering more useful content. A good feature about pinterest is that it always links to the source, so there is no plagiarism. (meaning there is no copy paste or forward, so the original owner always gets credit). So if I save an image from say instagram as a pin, pinterest links that image to the source link and any one who clicks on that image will be redirected to the actual content owner's account. This is especially helpful for content creators and makers who sell their work. Their product images can be pinned and served on pinterest feed and any clicks will take the user to the actual place where the image was originally uploaded (shopping site).

Personally pinterest helped me discover many rare content, even from Russian websites which otherwise doesn't show up on search engines.
