ICICI iMobile works only on IOS 17 and does not work on 16.*.*. The customer care says it is a regulatory requirement. However they are not sharing the relevant notification from RBI and responding with the same copy/paste text.

Anyone has any insight to this.

I use the imobile app on Android 10 flawlessly.
I can't imagine it not working on ios 16. There must be some other issue.

If you have reached the customer support, most probably you have reached a dead end.

Years back icici stopped sending me OTP for one of my accounts. After being after them in every which way and no resolution, had to make a complaint to CPGRAMS portal to get it working

Re: Must-Have Apps on your smartphone | Apps that you cannot do without

Here are the apps I frequently use:

Top Apps:

Google Tasks
Gmail
Instagram
YouTube
Clash of Clans
I've been particularly hooked on Clash of Clans for long time now.

YouTube:
I primarily use it for music. Since I have a premium subscription, I often play my favorite songs and lock the screen to listen for hours, whether I'm at home or using headphones in the office.

Gmail:
Whether I'm at the office or elsewhere, I have a habit of constantly checking my emails. This habit developed from dealing with work-related emails that flood in regularly.

When I'm out and about:

Paytm: For making payments.
Camera: To capture images of random things I purchase, like that spontaneous brownie milkshake.

Same thoughts. I don’t have the time and energy to chase this. Better to get a new phone and move on.

Thanks for CPGRAMS info, I’ll try out once I am not satisfied with complaints resolution. I’m raising a first level complaint with ICICI, which is supposed to reach Head of Phone Banking.

Re: Must-Have Apps on your smartphone | Apps that you cannot do without

Apart from the Usual Ones already discussed here, here's my list of Essentials. Note- I am a strong proponent of Open Source softwares(OSS) as they have least data extraction objective.
1. Syncthing App-I have the same over desktop, so that I can sync any fol der. These helps me in being upto date with my next 2 apps
2. Obsdian App- This is my Memory Management App, I write all notes, to do and whatever I study into this App. I also have purchased pen tablet for writing and saving directly and editing later.
3. KeepPass DX- My Password manager. I use syncthing yo sync it with the OSS app Keepass
4. Magster- Although I don't get much time to dwelve into, it's my E-Newspaper App, covering some major finance and national paper(The Hindu not there, sorry guys), it's my all in one destination. You get annual subscription Offers at 2k/year.
5. Payzapp- if you have HDFC card, use this app for flight/ hotel bookings, usually has the lowest rate among companies, even most times it lower than Axis Bank Grab-deals platform.
6. Google Podcasts- For my financial digest every evening while walking. I love the "We study Billionaires" podcast.
7. ReadEra- My free Ebook Reader. I love books but also I am bengali (that miser behaviour, no offense to anyone), so I download ebooks and read over the app or Kindle
8.Fuelio- How can I forget the app which mostly brings joy every time I fill up petrol of my car. Either the average mileage, or if not, the distance covered gives me a sense of maturity and pride for my car.
9. Unidays- For using my brother's college ID for student discounts on electronics and apparel.
10. Samsung Corporate- For getting all those corporate discounts of Samsung products.
11. Tripozo Train-- For ticket confirmation prediction before booking, train alarm before reaching station, coach position, and all train journey related info.
12. Ncalc+ - The app for all formula based calculations. Don't use extensively, but feels cool to use (and show off )
13. IndianOil One- I use my axis Indian Oil Fuel Credit Card for refuelling. Additionally, each time fill up fuel, I enter my phone number which is connected to Indian Oil rewards program. For approx 3-4 months of 5k fuel filling in average, it get 100-120 off on my LPG refuelling expenses.

Re: Must-Have Apps on your smartphone | Apps that you cannot do without

Nice thread
Now our life is fully dependent on mobiles and there is literally a lot of apps for any need under the sky.
Almost all the apps I use are covered by members. So without repeating again here I would like to mention specially one app which is literally running 24 hours on my phone. Its called tunein radio. It can play radio stations from all over the world. What I like more is that despite running all day it doesn't drain the battery and it has no ads

Re: Must-Have Apps on your smartphone | Apps that you cannot do without

I do not care for Google or Proprietary file managers: I use fx.

Same thing for gallery/photo viewing. I use F-stop.

I regard Google Photos as a completely useless backup. It just collects pics, it does not preserve any of the folder paths. Like throwing everything in the bin. However, it's there, it's free, and I don't bother to turn it off.

Whatsapp, to me, is not really "social media." It is simply what messaging should be in an age when one often wants to send more than a few words in text. I don't use it as social media: I belong to only two or three groups, sabha music stuff, of which one is admin-poster announcements only. The other includes an amount of chat. Nobody tells me good morning or goodnight regularly: fine by me!

The Whatsapp functionality is necessary. But the day everyone else moves to Signal, I'll dump it with joy.

And speaking of that company: it was probably a mistake to load Instagram. Really, the biggest brain-drain time waster I've ever known. Far worse than TV. But I fall into their trap every couple of days.

I like to control my user interfaces. Thus, I use Nova Launcher, and my last several phones have all looked much the same. Change is slow and organic: as and when I choose to see if some change works for me.

In rainy seasons, weather apps are very necessary. My biggy (with paid subscription) is Windy. My every-day is Meteo Blue. One or two others specialise in stuff like weather radar.

Google Maps remains a must. I have looked at alternatives but somehow take the easy one.

For "sharing" I have no choice but to use the Sony software for my Sony cameras.

By the way, I hate how everyone "shares" everything these days and just about every other communication verb is redundant. But that's another story

The thing I do least with my "phone" is... make phone calls. Due to hearing problems, I'd rather message. Apart from that, I see it as more a pocket computer than a phone.

But, for every-day computer use, I'll be right here, with my monitor, keyboard and mouse! That includes all forums, which I seldom look at on the phone or tablet, unless I'm away from home.

Re: Must-Have Apps on your smartphone | Apps that you cannot do without

My apps are split into two devices, i.e my tablet and my phone.

Phone Apps:
  1. BHIM (preferred), Google Pay for Payments
  2. Bitwarden as my password manager.
  3. Firefox and Brave for browser (I only use Chrome to fill Google Forms).
  4. Tuta (paid), my encrypted email service provider.
  5. Reddit and X, the defacto Social Mediums on my phone
  6. YouTube Music(premium) and Amazon Music, for Music and Podcasts
  7. Here and Waze, as navigation apps (I regularly contribute edits too)
  8. Wavelet (one time payment), to tune my wireless neckband.
  9. PlainApp , to transfer small files between Android and Windows via FTP.
  10. CMRL, for using Chennai Metro
  11. Zepp Life and Notify for Mi Band (one time payment) for my Mi Band.

Tablet Apps:
  1. All OTT Apps
  2. Samsung Notes (the best note taking app on Android if you use a stylus, only available on Samsung devices).
  3. PSPP, to emulate PSP games
  4. Duolingo (to kill time by learning a new language)
  5. Good Lock, a must on Samsung Android devices to tailor OneUI to your taste. (Note, it won't function properly on devices running OneUi core which most budget Samsung devices run on and, M,F and some lower end A series devices)

Re: Must-Have Apps on your smartphone | Apps that you cannot do without

I see most of the apps on my phone already mentioned here. So, I will list just those that haven't been mentioned here.
  • Structured: Planning and activity tracking app (I was diagnosed with ADHD as an adult and this app really helps with executive function throughout the day. It's great for making sure that I don't miss the self-care stuff -- eating, sleeping, skin care and exercise).
  • Pinterest: Great for pinning stuff you like and curating. I curate stuff related to fashion, cars and home decor.
  • Babbel: It's working out well for me for French.
  • HealthifyMe: I have been with their subscription for two years and it has worked out for me, but I am moving to an in-person trainer and dietician in a month.
  • Music: Other than Apple Music, I really like Apple's Classic Music app (again, instrumental classical music is wonderful for people with ADHD or even non-ADHD people with focus issues). I also love how Shazam integrates with Apple Music. Most of my playlists are tracks that I have Shazam'ed while sitting at some cafe with a book and coffee.
  • Hinge (hopefully temporary): Fewer people that don't know what they want compared to the alternatives.

iPad apps: Prime, Mubi, Hotstar, Netflix, Kindle, Babbel, ProCreate

Am surprised no one has mentioned Perplexity…. It’s way better than google search and also beats ChatGPT in my opinion. Give it a try (not aware if it’s on the android platform but it should be).

I use iMobile on a phone with android 8.1 and another phone with android 9 , works without any problems , not sure why they are imposing such rules on iOS though.

It's Apple's restriction. Since most of their phones get updated to the latest software versions. Android tends to support older device for much longer, since there are myriad number of devices and configurations, that most OEM's only tend to care their more premium lineup.

Pursuing further with ICICI, I was told that it’s a regulatory requirement by NPCI and their app is supported on iOS 17+ and Android 8+. I researched on this a bit further and looks like SIM and device binding is now required for any payment app. Source if anyone interested.

It also looks like HDFC, BHIM, GPay also have the same issue - source and link to discussions.

Looks like that for me I’ll have get a phone that supports iOS 17+ and will have to put the perfectly working phone on the showcase .
