The UFC/MMA Thread

I didn’t find any threads on UFC or MMA in general.

As a UFC fan and an amateur who trains MMA as a hobby, I’m starting this thread for fellow fans. We can discuss about MMA, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Wrestling - our favourite fighters, greatest fights, and everything else related to the sport of MMA.

We recently had two Indians debuting in UFC - Anshul Jubli and Puja Tomar. Puja became the first Indian to win in UFC last week.

This June is a great month for UFC fans with so many banger fights lined up. I’m barely over UFC 302 main event where Islam Makhachev and Dustin Porier put up an amazing fight, and now we have Khamzat vs Whittaker and Mcgregor vs Chandler coming up! Who do you think will win?

Re: The UFC/MMA Thread

Puja Tomar belongs to a place called Budhana in Muzaffarnagar district. Western UP, especially Meerut and Muzaffarnagar are breeding grounds for world class athletes. It must be a matter of utter proud for the locals there what laurels Tomar has brought.

The area is known for villages even accounting upto 5 olympians per village sometimes. Not to mention a lot more national and international level athletes across various sports. Kabaddi, wrestling, boxing and other such sports are promoted since childhood owing to the akhada culture present there. Almost every good village has to have an akhada where children join from early age, even girls.

With govt support these guys can shine like anything.

While I didn't think she won the fight, it was a joy to see her sheer passion and fighting spirit. Hopefully she will have a good run in the UFC.
That being said, the notorious fight might just be off if rumour mills are to be believed.

Indeed. The main and co-main events are changed.
Alex Pereira takes on Jiri Prochazka in the main event, while Ortega takes on Lopez for the co-main.

Both fights should be absolute bangers!

Yes, completely agree. Indians generally tend to have a better wrestling base than striking due to traditionally strong culture of wrestling in Haryana, West UP, Punjab which also means that you have better coaching available.

I think MMA will succeed in India only with private institutions' support and not government as it's not an Olympic sport, nor does it have a concept of "national team". MFN (run by Ayesha Shroff, Jackie Shroff's wife) is doing a great job at promoting MMA in India the right way.

Her fight was very close, but I believe she outstruck her opponent in R1 & R2.

Honestly, Pereria vs Jiri is a more exciting fight to watch so I'm happy for the main event! Same for co-main, Ortega and Lopez are both exciting fighters so in a way the card got better.

The only one that I'm slightly disappointed with is Khamzat not being able to fight at the Saudi Arabia event, was looking forward to this fight.

Re: The UFC/MMA Thread

Long time, and no activity on this thread.

Unlike the world of MMA, where there’s a lot going on.

Alex Periera, the Poatan, is on a dream run and is knocking out one guy after the other in spectacular fashion. He’s the best LHW striker by a long way, and nobody seems to match him.

Another one of my favorite fighters, Francis Ngannou got back to MMA fight after a long 3 years period and KO’d his opponent Feriera (who was H-U-G-E, btw) within the first round. I want to see more of Francis Ngannou, he’s 38 and might not have many more fights left in him.

There’s another banger of a fight card coming up next weekend in UFC 308. Here are my predictions for the main and co main event.

Main event - Max wins over Ilia (Decision)
Co main - Whittaker wins over Khamzat.

Both of those went in the opposite direction, but that's the fighting business, I guess.

Ilia was indeed in cracking form going into the fight, and I think all the accumulated damage came home to roost for Max.

For Khamzat, that crank was Khabib-esque. Probably with more strength at a different angle. I was wincing by the time Rob tapped. Perfectly executed gameplan.

Yeah, both went the other way. I think I was more wishing than doing a balanced analysis.

Ilia proved to be an elite elite striker and there’s no one who comes close in his division.

On the Whittaker jaw break, that was nasty! I hope he recovers well and fully. I was discussing how it happened with my coach and he said most likely Whittaker kept his jaw open and Chimaev just cranked it hard.

I’m not adding the photo of his broken jaw here but it’s just nasty! Fight business is no joke :(
