Re: HAL Airport Bengaluru to be made operational for civilian flights?

I hope this reignites the plan for an underpass at Wind Tunnel road junction

IIRC the initial road testing for this was done in 2015 and has just not taken off unlike the underpass at CV Raman Nagar road junction.

The HAL airport can be used for smaller aircraft like ATR's which connect to nearby cities.

For example.... a person who wants to go to Chennai or Coimbatore can use HAL. The commute time is less and stress free.

3: For the airport to be viable, it needs to scale up in size but none of the support infrastructure will permit this and the military wlll not release land easily
Infact the traffic would add up in the Old Airport Road, making snarls even longer

Also, what would BIAL's position be for having a second airport inside Bangalore ? Since BIAL is a public limited by itself, won't they have had some conditions upfront, for ensuring they get enough air traffic growth ?

Re: HAL Airport Bengaluru to be made operational for civilian flights?

I guess this discussion came up earlier and I felt this is a reasonable short term solution. Of course this was not a popular opinion then as well.

1. Have only few domestic flights mainly catering to the business fliers.
1a. The airlines can charge more to business travellers.
1b. This will also reduce families/groups who usually have more baggage and take time for checkin.
2. We shouldnt be comparing the pre 2008 flights and traffic. No one from the west and north part of the city will use this even it becomes operational. The traffic will be proportional to the number of flights and it can be limited.

Now, will the authorities think through all these and enforce these is a different issue altogether.

Re: HAL Airport Bengaluru to be made operational for civilian flights?

While being cognisant of a non competitive agreement (BIAL), I also find it crippling and short sighted towards the convenience of citizens at large. Any means to provide a choice to a customer is not to be undermined (gives me nightmares of our socialist dark days) and let there be growth of air traffic in A & B & C airports. Not having metro connectivity to an airport opened in 2008 even by 2024 is criminal and enough reason for opening up alternative airport operations.

BLR-CJB and BLR-MAA are operated by the largest aircraft in IndiGo’s fleet, the A321. Almost every flight is full. The ATR’s essentially do the route development bit, compared to the Airbus, costs next to nothing to operate. They are typically deployed on sectors such as CNN,VGA, SXV, CDP, RQY. Once the sector develops into a consistent viable sector, the Airbus’s are deployed. BLR-CCJ started off with a single daily flight on the ATR and has now progressed to thrice a day with an Airbus and two ATR’s operating the sector.

Re: HAL Airport Bengaluru to be made operational for civilian flights?

HAL airport might not be the best option. Speaking just from an airside perspective, the amount of work that needs to be done is massive. Example :

1.The runway at HAL, R09 and R27, neither have a rapid exit taxiway. A RET allows the planes to vacate the runway at higher speed, approximately 50 knots thereby reducing runway occupancy time and improving the runway utilisation. A non-RET needs the planes to slow down under 10 knots for the 90 degree turn, thereby taking more time.
2. The runway at HAL has only a CAT-1 ILS on one runway, R27. In comparison, BLR has all four runways equipped with ILS, with two already supporting CAT-3B minimums and upgradation work going on for the north runway to make them CAT-3B compliant. Winter time operations will be severely affected with only a CAT-1 ILS.
3. HAL does not a parallel taxi way, which again goes miles to help runway utilisation which in turn allows the airport to handle more traffic, bringing in revenue.

The amount of investment required to bring HAL upto mark would be quite significant. It would be prudent to develop a new greenfield airport, preferably to the south or even the east, something similar to the new Noida and Mumbai airports, decongesting the city, having dedicated public transport systems in place connecting them to the city, adopting the best of development practices that have happened since the HAL airport came to fruition many moons ago. Peace
