One of the most awaited video game releases – Grand Theft Auto 6, has been delayed until May 2026.

The sequel in developer Rockstar Games' record-breaking video game series was due to be released on consoles later this year.

Justifying the delay, Rockstar Games told fans they needed extra time to deliver "at the level of quality you expect and deserve."

A trailer for GTA 6 was released in December 2023, and it garnered 100 million views in no time. The 90-second clip revealed two main protagonists, and a glimpse of the game's fictional, Florida-inspired setting Leonida.

In its statement, Rockstar said the "interest and excitement" in the game had been "truly humbling for our entire team".

The gaming company is known for long development cycles, and it has been 12 years since GTA 5 was released.

GTA 5 is the second-best-selling video game of all time and is very popular due to its online mode.

Rockstar is known for its perfectionist approach and Straus Zelnick, CEO of parent company Take Two Interactive, previously said each new game from the developer "needs to be something you've never seen before".

GTA 6 will only be available on PlayStation 5 and Xbox at launch, meaning owners of older consoles will need to upgrade to play it.

Once released, GTA 6 is expected to break sales records and become a bigger hit than its predecessor.

FYI- GTA 5 was released in 2013! And GTA 4 in 2007. Finally, some news of GTA 6. I expect the best from GTA 6. What if it too so long because GTA 6 would have Forza-esque attention to detail. I am going to tell my friends about this news!

With GPU prices where they are at present, I am no longer counting on my pc's ability to play GTA 6. My Poor 1660 Super is happy in not knowing this news. That said, they announce GTA6, go 500 days more without any news and then drop this delay bombshell. This was expected anyway as its a Rockstar game and the scope is MASSIVE.

I was 10 years old when GTA V came out. I'll be 23 when GTA VI releases .

This is possibly the most awaited video game of all time. Considering the amount of success and record breaking sales Rockstar games had with V, I won't mind waiting a bit longer for the next release. Don't want to go through the entire cyberpunk saga again



Also, Rockstars last game, Red Dead Redemption 2 was delayed in a similar manner. It was expected to release in the second half of 2017 --> then may of 2018 --> finally launched in October of 2018.

Yup, Rockstar loves to give the stepmotherly treatment to PC players. But who am i kidding, I'll get a console just for this game.

Hell I've bought GTA V twice, first on the Xbox One, and then on PC.

There goes my excitement for my recent 9070 XT build lol. Guess it'll be another run of the Witcher 3 and Red-Dead Redemption till next year. The one good thing is that 26th is my birthday so I'll treat it as a gift.

I've bought GTA5 twice already. Once during launch on the PS3 and later on Steam. But it's a game that I'm never tired of playing.

I can only hope with this delay they will be ready with the PC version at launch. PC gaming has grown exponentially compared to when GTA5 was launched.

Either way, I'm currently playing other games before GTA 6 is going to release- Spiderman 2, Red Dead redemption 2, GOW Ragnorok. Even though they are now 2-3 years old, they are still fantastic games

Considering GTA V and IV were also delayed during their time, it’s not really a surprise they did the same for GTA VI.

Until it’s released, I’m gonna look forward to Mafia Old Country and Ghost of Yotei.

P.S: If anyone could suggest any good first person shooters on PS5 similar to COD it’ll be much appreciated.

I don't mind this delay. Whatever little games I play, I do on my PS3 (Yeah, you heard it right!). For GTA6, I will need to upgrade my ancient console to a PS5. I get more time to research on what other titles I need to purchase with GTA6.

But I feel sorry for folks who were eagerly waiting for the December 2025 release of GTA6.

Can't say I'm surprised, but I trust Rockstar games will knock it out of the park as usual. I do hope the gameplay controls are better defined that RDR2

This might just push me towards buying a PS5!
