the catch line is Star in a reasonably priced car. The Liana may be ugly, but it is reasonably priced.

Just to make it clear, the present TG car is not the Liana but the Chevrolet Laceti (aka Chevrolet Optra).

The Liana is only used for race drivers since most of the previous drivers had posted their lap times in the Liana.

The non racing stars who had driven the Liana were called once again to post their times in the Laceti.

I think they choose the Liana because they want the lap times of F1 drivers to be directly comparable. They are keeping the car a common factor between the drivers. Their first reasonably priced car was the Liana, thats when Nigel Mansell, Damon Hill, Mark Webber and the Stig put up a lap time on the Top Gear F1 drivers lap times board. Then in the last season they got a new reasonably priced car, the Chevy Lacetti, after which Jenson Button and now Lewis Hamilton had a lap, but not in the Lacetti, instead they had it in the Liana.

Here are the Lap times.
The Stig 1.44.4
Nigel Mansell 1.44.6
Lewis Hamilton 1.44.7 (wet and oily track)
Jenson Button 1.44.7
Damon Hill 1.46.3
Mark Webber 1.47.5 (wet track)

Hilarious Bit

JC: who do you want as your co-driver this year ? some useless driver who ...

Ham : do you want the job ?

prelude to the show stated , hamilton was a keen observer and lapped up every bit of detail from stig. that was a class lap.

Considering that the stig knows the track like the back of his paws, this is an achievement.
Actually 1.44.7 was very much possible. The track was not so wet and I think the oil was not all over the track. I feel oil + water thing was bit exaggerated.
But who cares, Top Gear is always fun! JC Rocks!

P.S. Even the BMW Track Trainer 330i was great. The car lapping all by itself.

i agree with F50, the track was not really THAT wet, id call it damp with few wet spots.
but anyway great drive, i really hope he comes back on a bone dry track and beats the stig's time.

This vid has just confirmed my complete backing of Hamilton in 2008. The guy is humming along while trying to get a good lap in???? And he calls the liana a "good car" ??????? Download the file off torrents. Top GEar is Top notch. Eagerly awaiting his Dry lap to remain on top of the board for a long time to come.

there is no the stig, where did the other topgear thread on tbhp go, I've posted some gyan there

and yeah I don't really think it was such a wet lap, I don't really think there was oil on the track, Hamilton cut the hammerhead and followthrough and I am 100% sure the lap timings were manipulated(everything is, even the powerlap timings of cars)

There was a film in some old series(4 I think) where they put old versions of the same car against the newer version, like mr2, 300z vs 350z etc 1/5th mile drag, they had borrowed somebody's old mr2 and invited him for the filming, that guy has given good account of how TG films such epic race things etc.

There was another report on an aircraft enthusiasts forums, from people who were present during the filming, the eurofighter pilot was asked to not give his 100%, just dig up stuff on the net, google

and also, Jeremy himself makes jokes when TV awards people, call Topgear a factual non scripted show, everything it isn't

TopGear makes a good TV show, not a good car review program! Don't draw conclusions from everything you see on the show, End of discussion!
