Gift for a newborn?

I'm looking to gift something to a very dear friend's newborn girl child. Any suggestions? No budget restrictions as such, basically because I can't think of too many expensive things that an infant would desire.

traditionally, people love it when u gift gold to a girl.

otherwise, look for things that they may not have. car seat, stroller (provided they can use them), playstation (the infant kind, chances are she will get many).

you are right, not many expensive things she needs at this time. you can probaby buy something for the parents, like a digi/handy cam etc, to take her snaps.

A small piece of jewelery would be nice, like a small gold-locket-thing on a thin gold-chain. You get lockets with all kinds of nice cute shapes like teddy-bears, bunnies, cats etc. nowadays (My sister has a lot of these). The kid/baby won't appreciate it now, but the parents will, and so will the kid when she grows up. Something to remember B&T-uncle by

Most other gifts would be too temporary and the kid will outgrow nearly anything you get her. Jewelry tends to be kept for a long time. This is, if you intend to spend a bit of money on the gift.

I would prefer a light dress (Summer is around the corner, remember?) - about 100 Rs. or so.

Or may be a rattle.

But if you think that is a cheapo - go in for any of (a) an adjustable gold bangle (b) Silver anklets (c) gold coin - even 1 gm gold coins are available.

Hi B&T for a baby girl,a pair of simple(wire) gold earings could be good option and a set of baba-suit or soft towels wrap around would be a better choice

lol, wanna be dads uncles and bros pouring out ideas.

Look at Hydra! Man!

Whats your budget? Dress + those Johnson's products are what most buy.

I still remember and have a golden watch lookalike I was gifted when I was a tiny kid. The dummy watch shows my birth time. Cute.

New parents need useful/functional stuff more than symbolic stuff.

Since budget is no limit, consider this:

1) Baby Monitor (Video or just audio) - Parents can monitor the sleeping baby from other rooms, very useful until the kid starting moving around.
2) Motorised Baby Rocker - Sleepless parents won't mind spending money duracell for a few wink of sleep. How I wished I had this last year for my second kid, it worked great with my first kid many years ago.

If on lower budget, give infant clothes for 3-6 months size. Any amount of dresses will come in handy.

it is a tough one. gold is a good idea as they grow out of the clothes real fast.

Clothes are useful, gold isn't.

Lots to choose from..

- baby clothes (nappies, bibs, tops, 3-in-1 sets, towels, bedsheets/bedding)
- baby diapers
- baby woolen clothes (cap, socks, sweaters, thermals)
- baby cosmetics (oils, powder, creams, soaps), bath seats
- baby bottles/baby bags
- prom
- gold

Just drop in the baby section of any good store and you would get lots of ideas. Most of the stuff is really usefull and babies need lots of them...

Thanks for all the suggestions. The friend is a staunch Muslim. Isnt there something about Muslims and gold? Not sure about this, my muslim brothers please excuse my ignorance if I'm wrong but you guys arent particularly fond of it, right?

The baby rocker seems to be a splendid idea. Available easily?

May be a good digital camera and a nice album. The gift provides them with some good pictures and nice memories..
