Vishy Gets a record 5th Chess Oscar

Folks,
Irrespective of the game the whole of India follows, Vishwanathan Anand had always made his presence felt for so many years or should I say some decades now. He has been conferred the Chess Oscar for the record 5th time becoming the only non-Russian and non -Soviet Union Player ever to have won the award for 5 times.
Adding to the 1997,1998,2003 , 2004 awards he had been conferred for the exceptional play he displayed in all the tournaments in 2007. Its a proud Moment for India. Kudos to the Genius .

This guy is one who really makes us proud to be Indians. And still everyone is focused on those Dravids, Dhonis, etc.... Not that they shouldnt get their 15 minutes of fame, but anand has been a much better and more consistent performer than all these cricketers put together.

He is really an inspiration. I hope one day he gets his due as in fame and recognition.

What a shame that both electronic and print media ignored it for "Tamasha" cricket (or bikini cricket as Dravid said).I heard it 1st time on t-bhp.

Forget about Milkha Singh,PT Usha,Sachin,Kapil or Gavaskar, he is the BEST sportsman India has produced in last 100yrs barring Hockey legend Dhyan chand who is equal to Vishy IMHO.

I thought his name was Anand. V Anand. Vishwanathan Anand.

Not Vishwanath, to call him 'Vishy'

His nick was never Vishy.

He may have been called Vishy Anand by some one, but I can take that up off-line with who ever started that.

Chillax Condor ! I think this link would clarify, but again whether its a nickname or people call, he is remembered and recognised as Vishy Anand more so in abroad (because of the difficulty in pronouncing Vishwanathan).

Welcome to Vishy Anand's Home Page

cheers: anyways and its nice to see this stalwart make his mark inspite of our cricket crazy nation.

@Mavrick, we are going OT.
Any ways, to close this, even the link you have given always calls him 'Anand'. (I've gone through the text ). Only the banners seem to say Vishy. And if it is difficult for people to pronounce Vishwanathan, they can always call him by his name - 'Anand'

It's like "Gandhi" used to refer to the Mahatma. Now it means Sonia G. The way things are going, soon "Mahatma" will mean Rahul Gandhi.

Reviving this thread, anyone here following the World Championship between Anand and Carlsen?

I have downloaded the android app to watch the moves live.
