I dont know if this is the right place to discuss this, but just wanted to share my experience with you all.

Last week during my visit to Lalbagh to buy some plants for my garden, happened to see a couple walking by. Out of the blue, the husband raised his hand and just thrashed the woman's face. She started to bleed from her face profusely. I wanted to get down and give him a piece of his own medicine but i couldnt. What would i do in such a situation other than feel sorry for the lady? The cops and security around were just standing there and watching the whole thing as though it was some sort of a movie. i agree there are ups and downs in every marital relationship, but that doesnt give the husband the right to physically hurt a woman in public especially. Guys like him should be taken to task either by the public around or handed over to the police. I have noticed quite a few incidents like this but you cant just walk in there alone and try to make a difference. Everyone around should have a similar mindset too.

Uh....never, ever, interfere in the private matters of a couple, no matter how violent they get. If you intervene physically, you might find that the victimized party (usually the female) actually hold you (the knight in shining armour) to blame more than their spouse. That's how it works.

Also, it is just an assumption that they were hubby and wifey. Could be any 'other' type of relationship disguised to appear as such in public. Don't interfere, if someone really needs help they'll ask for it. Lots of things go on in every society that we do not like, people indulge in fetishes and elaborate role-playing too.

Intervening in such matters will only cause more misery for all concerned.

There is nothing wrong in asking the male not to act in such a manner on public. If he talks about thats his personal, it has be take place in a private place and not in public

Having said that we were not sure what has prompted him to act in such a way. Not all have superior control over emotions

Quite true. The best you can do to ask them to wash their dirty linen in private. Ask them to take it indoors.

Hey you can definitely question and tell the other person to behave properly in a public place.

SuperSyn actually has a point. You may get blamed for interfering in someone's personal issue. Also a person who hits his wife/girl friend in public obviously does not have basic dignity or culture. There is a high probability that the guy can actually turn on you. A spurt of emotion might have got over him, making him act in such a manner.

Better to watch the situation carefully and interfere (not physically) if the matter goes out of hand.

I once saw a girl get her bottom slapped by two guys on a motorcycle.
Happened in from of the old Music world location on Banjara HIlls Rd #1.

Was in car with my wife and the only way I could keep up with them was by driving recklessly. If I was on my bike and if I was alone I would have crashed into them to stop them from getting away. I tried with my car but it was not possible to do anything without being way beyond reckless.

I feel very very sorry for that girl and my apologies to her for not being able to do anything. Anyways, why don't these girls just pick up the nearest stone and fling it at the molestors. This is India any eve teaser caught by public will pray he was never born.

Sadly, one cannot do much unless it is life threatening. Only thing would be to express disgust non verbally

Similar incident i had seen on carter road,a zen came by it braked hard screeched stopped, and in no time we saw the guy punched on the girls face and screeched and zoomed from there,we 4-5of us were sitting there and we were asking eachother did that guy punched the girl??? all were shocked..!! how pathetic man,"No-one has a right to touch anyone or phisically assult anyone"

Lot of stuff happens in Lalbaugh, dont even think of helping anyone there.

agree: with SuperSyn. However, nothing wrong in walking upto the woman and asking her politely, if she's ok and needs some help.
Sometimes, people do want help but just can't summon the courage to ask for it. Similarly, sometimes, people do want to help but prefer to stay away for the fear of becoming victimised for nothing.

This has happened to me also. Me and my friends tried intervening in a husband wife drunken brawl on the roadside to help the lady. Things cooled down when we pulled the husband aside, pacified and got the lady some medical attention since she was profusely bleeding from her nose.

The husband now turned his fury at us and tried slapping a friend of mine. All hell broke loose and we subdued this chap and kept him nailed on the road. His wife walks up with a broom towards us and asks us to let go of her husband.
The exact sentence she said was " namma maney jagala nimage yenu kelasa ".Translated " its a problem in our house why do you want to get involved".

I swore never to help anyone in such trivial issues unless asked.

Physical abuse of either humans or animals is against the law. The victiim should be advised of her legal rights and that she can register a police complaint. The abuser should also be warned of the legal consequences. But if the victim refuses to register the complaint, nothing can be done, since she is an adult.

This really is the most appropriate way to handle the situation. Unless there is a social outcry against such behaviour it will continue unabated.

I agree SuperSyn, but that's not the way to behave in public especially with a lady. With guys having a fight in understood, not with a lady. They could have had a different type of relationship no one cares. This for one was definitely not a fetish.

And yeah, i wouldnt want to be on the recieving end when i try to help, that would really push me off the edge.

Its true with most women since they fear that it would backfire more when they get back home. Most arent even aware that there are laws which can protect them in such situations. And yeah, i believe there is nothing wrong in asking if she is ok, but i didnt know if i should even ask her that.
