What kind of books are you looking at buying?

You can go to avenue road where you can get used text books and guides, etc. which will be of the current school and college syllabus.

I guess you can also find a good deal of novels and other books too. Church street (off Brigade road) has a couple of hawkers selling novels.

Just be sure to check if all pages are intact.

In Madras, you will find some fantastic old books in the Lily Pond Complex (ertswhile Moore Market) just beside the Central Station. Or on the pavements in Anna Salai. In regular shops, Landmark comes out with a big yearly discount. There is also this shop in 2nd Avenue , Anna Nagar which is a discount store throughout the year.

In Bangalore, I have seen (5 years back) some nice old books in the bye lanes of Commercial Street & on M.G.Road. I do not know of any discount store in Bangalore. The bangy bookworms should be able to help you in that.

Oh Yeah. Tell me about it. I bought a genuine leather bound "Tale of two Cities" by Charles Dickens for a princely sum of TWO rupees.

Cheers,

Rajan

If you are looking for current topics, discounts if any, are hard to find.

Make a trip to Hyderabad. On Sundays at Abids, its a book lovers paradise, the entire road stretch on the footpath is covered with books.

And, there is not a single book that you won't find. From glossy foreign magazines, tech books, fiction etc.

I typically buy the following at these prices

Better Photography ( couple of months old) : Rs.10
Inside Outside ( 2 months old) : Rs. 10
The lovely glossy BBC motoring mag : Rs. 10

Sometimes above magazines at a crazy price of 5 for 30-40 bucks too

And, brand new fiction novels from Jefferey Archer, John Grisham etc for about 75 bucks-100 bucks a piece.
Never tried the tech books since i am not a techie. But, rest assured the variety is mind-boggling

Adding to what mobike008 has said, for technical books, you can try Koti (along with woman's collage compound wall and opposite to Andhra Bank), where you get books on both rent and at discounted rate for buying.

Blossoms has a good collection and you get a good discount. You can also bargain. If he doesn't have the book you want, he'll procure it for you. Strand also has a standard discount (15-20%). However the way the books are arranged is not great. Probably due to the size of the shop. They will also procure the book for you if you request them.

Landmark is great. However no discounts and sometimes its prized pretty high.
