The most important thing is every case is different, every person responds differently, and cancers may be detected at different stages. If the hospital is good, then that should be enough. Your point about Artemis is valid only if you are dealing with a minor disease. With cancer, inconvenience and comfort should not get in the way of getting the best that is available and affordable.

well this is the standard treatment in ovarian cancer .they go for a laporotomy and remove the tumour and access whether it has spread to any more organs like rectum, omentum, peritoneum , lymph nodes and liver . no amount of tests will give with 100% accuracy that it has not spread. what are the levels of cea-125 which is a tumour marker.after surgery both chemo and radio therapy will be given
sudito your mothers cancer was different from this one that might have been cervical or ovarian malignancy but this is ovarian .surgical treatment is same but chemotherapy is different as different drugs are used.
you can always go for second opnion but dont waste much time

I will give you the whole story as it happened step by step.
My mom one evening called my sister and told her confidentially that she was bleeding from her private part. They went to the family gynecologist next evening. An old man in whose hands my sister was born in 1961. He said let's get the uterus operated out immediately. I said who will do it? He said I will do it. I didn't ask another question. I admitted her the very next day. The operation happened the day after. After the operation doc told me "I removed her uterus as well as the ovary - didn't take any chance. Take this to the lab for biopsy" - he handed over a small transparent plastic bag that had the organ in which I was born!!
It was a very different kind of feeling to hold it in my hand. I walked like in a daze upto the lab. I don't even remember it very clearly.
After a few days they confirmed the suspicion of the doctor. I don't remember the exact language of the diagnosis.
Next we went to a celebrity oncologist and he suggested cobalt therapy. One shot every day for about a month. Then they did a whole body scan to see if there was any trace left anywhere. Nothing was found. They suggested annual check up. My mother never bothered.
One other important thing - apart from the speed of removal - I never told her she had cancer. I said they are doing preventive therapy so that it doesn't turn into cancer. I think patient's level of mental confidence is very important.
Get a good surgeon. Get the affected part removed right away. Then you can think and discuss and blah blah blah. If you seek second opinion you will get thousands of opinions.
The organs are not really necessary for her anymore. Removing them won't harm her in anyway. If it was like liver or kidney etc which cannot be removed then I would have agreed about a few opinions etc.
Here you just get the damn thing removed fast and then think.

I think I will qualify my "advice" with one other statement - the operation can be done in a haste only if she does not have any other medical complication like diabetes, hyper tension, bad heart condition, low haemoglobin count etc. Otherwise it's a very routine operation. If she has any of these they will first cure that and then do the operation. That might take some time.
Sudipto
Sudipto Thanks for more details, Tomrrow, there will be some more tests like NOC from Neurologist and Cardiologist for surgery. All blood tests are normal. All urine test are normal. But CA125 level is high, I will check the exact number but I think its 1345

Please seek an opinion at AIIMS - one of the few places where TRUE medical advice is given, as opposed to 'commercial' advice.

However, the first month budget of RGCI has been close to what they've spent in five years of treatment/followups/treatment of relapse at AIIMS.

Not to mention that he's heartily alive despite a relapse.

/Nothing against Artemis but just based on my RGCI experience.

@rk i would suggest you dont get tensed as my grandmom and uncle both were had cancer which was treated for last year. Please maintain your calm and ask your mother to maintain her calm. During the chemo the person tends to get weak and hairfall depends on the strength of the dosage.
The main problem with cancer is the patient begins to think too much about it and hears lots of rumours and i would seriously tell you maintain a positive focus for it. I guess a bone marrow test would be suggested to judge the extent of the disease.
chemo just takes a day and the number of sittings do vary.
Be brave and my prayers are with you.

Hi Rk, I second what Sudipto said. Don't wait for too many opinions and get over with the surgery ASAP. You may consult other doctors for further treatement.
My aunt was detected with Breast cancer in 1995, and was operated within a week of initial detection. She is fine now, even stopped all medication since 2003 or so.
She was operated in a hospital in Thane and rest of treatment was conducted at AIIMS. The most difficult is part of the treatment is Chemotheraphy where the patient gets very weak. Give her strength and take good care of her diet during this period.

Wishing you all best of luck

I have a deep distrust if not disrespect for "celebrity" surgeons and don't believe in wasting time waiting for their opinions. This concept of celebrity surgeons is prevalent only in our country where we give them demi-god status.
In the developed world a celebrity surgeon is one who has developed a new revolutionary way of surgery or a new kind of therapy or medicine etc - not someone who has done a few successful but routine operations or has a very shiny clinic.
Unless there is some very highly complicated medical condition where the doctors are in two minds, I don't see any reason why I will wait for an appointment with a celebrity/senior surgeon.
I am sad to see another thread here where someone has arrived in Bombay with his ailing father in search of some celebrity surgeon who has apparently done surgery on another celebrity film star !!! All this for a very routine ailment.
This is the result of the complete distrust that we have in our medical system, which in turn is the result of a lot of other things prevalent in our society. It's sad. But it is costing a lot of money to everyone and lot of lives are getting lost waiting for such celebrity opinions.
I hope Bharat's mother gets the correct treatment and on time.

Couldn't agree more with what you have said with such emotion, Sudipto!

Which is why my trust lies with the govt hospitals, the best of them being AIIMS. While many of the prevailing conditions in these hospitals are deplorable, these seem to be the only places where true medical advice is available, not tainted with greed for kickbacks, commissions on room rent and financial 'targets' to be achieved!

AIIMS is of course excellent, but as with nearly all Govt. hospitals, service is often lacking, and mostly available only to highly placed public servants and politicians. Regarding greed, of course it is higher in private hospitals, but many doctors even at private hospitals have high levels of ethics and integrity.

Hey dude, In Bangalore there is a place called Curie Centre of Oncology, St John Medical College Campus,Sarjapur Road, Koramangala, Bangalore - 080 25538194. My mom was diagnosed with breast cancer 8 years back, it was in the initial stage, the Dr’s were so kind, they called each family member and explained what Oncology is and how we need to take care. Dr. Killara and Dr.Brundha had treated my mom.

Thanks guys...

I have decided to stick to Artemis, because of two reasons:

1. I got in touch with My earlier Boss's wife as she is a senior cardiologist in Artemis and she told me for no need to go any where else. She confirmed that Dr Vaid(ex RGCI expert) is in Artemis and she will discuss the whole case with him personally. Also they have senior ex from Dharamshilla. Also she promised that my mother will get best attention from all the doctors in artemis, and I can trust her.

2. No Time to go for another round of tests in another hospital.

I was actually concentrating more on surgeons and experts instead of Hospital and I think I can trust people in Artemis. Also they have all the latest machines and chemotherapy facility.

I have to now do the tough tasks of getting my mom agreed to surgery without revealing cancer.

That's good.
Like myself and few others already recommended consulting Dr. A.K. Vaid, your mother is going to be in safe hands. He is a doctor who not only knows his job well but has good values as well.

The doctor told my mom that what she had was pre-cancerous. That is, this would turn into cancer if left like that without removal. She believed the bull ****, because she had 100 per cent faith in that doctor. This is what they mean by white lies. You can try this trick.
