Help needed in control problem

Hello "team" mates,
I have to do a small research project on a control's issue where' we've to go deep into a control problem of any kind.
for example: Cruise control... the controller actually has less to do with the rest of the mechanics of the car. It should behave the way we want it to.

if possible could you guys give me suggestions on controls problems in automobiles... some hurdles ,still to be crossed and are more towards the controller side of the problem...

For example performance and fuel efficiency can be increased using "valve timing control"...
similar way "controlling some parameter" "performance /fuel efficiency improvement can be obtained"

I'd love to do something related to automobiles...
so do let me know about any idea that comes in your mind...
cheers blaze
