I myself do not smoke, but my friends do. Developed a free android application to help people quit smoking.

But for it to work, it requires you to press a button on an android widget each time you smoke. Within a few days, it draws graphs about your smoking patterns, consumption. Also gives out interesting facts about the total life you will end up reducing, tar inhaled, money spent. The most useful feature being a widget which counts the time since your last smoke. It will be red colored indicating you should not smoke right now, or green colored indicating that you may smoke now. If you follow its advice (which might be difficult i agree) you will end up reducing your cigarettes smoked number in a week.

Search for "Ciggie" in Android market. Its a free application :) All the best.

I agree 100% with this line.

Quiting smoking has improved my quality of life.
  1. I feel fresher, my skin feels better.
  2. I don't stink.
  3. I will live longer.
  4. The risk of cancer and heart disease is almost the same as a non-smoker.
  5. I can taste even subtle flavors in food.
  6. I enjoy my food much more than before.
  7. I never worry that I might be carrying toxic radioactive* waste on my when playing with kids.
  8. I cycle 11 kms everyday non-stop without losing my breath or fatigue. Twice.
  9. I am setting a good example for my child.

I would say its probably worse than heroin. Its legal (unlike heroin), you do not have to look far and wide for one (unlike heroin), its cheap (unlike herion .... I think) and its basically so very very handy. Drive, take a stroll or whatever and just simply light up. You dont ever need an excuse.

Butttttttt I have to confess. I almost reached for that cigarette. All the while that he was smoking, I kept shifting from side to side. I could barely look at him. Uuuffffffffffffffffff this thing is soooooooooooooo hard to let go.

Righto. You can smoke anywhere / anytime / as many times as you wish and it is a socially accepted vice (In the sense people will frown if you drink at work place or during a working day but smoking is alright).

The first few days will be difficult but at the same time since the resolve is strong, you will beat the urge. Dont worry, the urge will taper off. And yeah, the intangible benefits are many :D

Wonderful thread. Is there anything in the world TBHP doesn't talk about?

I have been NICOTINE ADDICT (not so proud to call myself like this) for the past 18 years @ average of 6-8 per day.

Exactly my situation. I've quit lots of times and never crossed 24hrs.

Let me start all over again - from today, this moment. I have one stick in my pocket right now and I am going to keep it as long as I can.

^^ ch.nathan: Sorry mate, but that won't work. My suggestion is,wait till you've had your lunch, or when the skies are overcast or whatever your weakest moment is, go out, light up, savour the smoke to the fullest KNOWING it's your last one and then quit.

My bet is you may even throw it away before it's fully done, knowing that you are now fully satisfied and don't need to smoke another cigarette n your life.

Good luck!

This didn't work for me in the past. I have had almost 20-30 "last" ones. :)

I quit too this Saturday, slippped once on Sunday afternoon, but have been a good boy since then :I Rule:. Thanks all for sharing your experiences, this thread was one of the biggest motivators for me to take this decision after 8 years of continuous ( Read 10 -12 ) cigarettes a day.

Yep... that was the story of most of my previous attempts.

The thing is, if you go without smoking all day, the hit from that evening cigarette is so immense it is hard to believe nobody spiked it with something illegal. It is a great whoosh of mind blowing nicotine. Nothing at all like the experience of smoking when you do it every few hours or minutes.

It leads to spending the rest of the evening trying to recapture that experience. You never do, of course: you just drift back into being a routine smoker again.

But the good sign is I am trying again. Just now crossed 24 hours - the longest gap in the past 15 years.

@ch.nathan- Don't sweat it. You just weren't ready yet. It will happen.

I highly recommend registering on this website. It's free and more importantly it tracks your stats smoke-free. For example mine today reads:

Name: quitnet.png
Views: 862
Size: 33.9 KB

When you see it like that, believe me it's a real thrill and keeps you going especially in the early days of a quit when the numbers really look startling! All the best.

Disclaimer: I am not associated with that website in any commercial manner.

Any idea, if moving to those electronic ciggy's help you in eventually quitting?

Electronic cigarettes are just an alternative nicotine-delivery system that bypasses the pitfalls of pollution/inconveniencing non-smokers. It also doesn't deposit any tar in your lungs since there is no actual combustion- presumably the only thing that goes into your lungs is some steam (which is a good thing, right?)

But important to note that you are still subjecting your body to nicotin which is still a poison and highly addictive. SO I would say, No, it doesn't help cure your smoking habit.

Nobody is ever "ready" to give up smoking or any other major addiction. It just has to be done.

On the other hand, failure does not mean don't try again. Keep at it, ch.nathan :)

My desk with full with water bottles, large coffee mugs, headphone, etc. etc. Have also pinned the printout of that chart at my desk.

And my output at work today is ZERO. :D
