I will go against the tide and give positive feedback about Odiyan. Don't get me wrong - it's not what it was hyped up to be, but equally I think the negative feedback is also over-hyped. Of course, I had the "advantage" of watching the movie after reading all the negative feedback. In my opinion, the movie is worth a watch. The overall mood was also generally positive at the movie hall where I watched the movie (there were only about 70-80 people most of whom I know personally).
I actually liked it more than Kayamkulam Kochunni which I watched about a month back and 2.0 which I watched last weekend.
The movie has its flaws. It's a bit too long. I think the Manju Warrier-Mohanlal song need not have been in the movie (the song itself is good). The non-linear story telling method at times has abrupt jumps between past and present, editing could have been better. Peter Hein has used some imagination in the stunts, but the stunts do have a Pulimurugan hangover. There isn't a proper explanation of the villain's reasons for his villainy.
Mohanlal has done a good job - his transformation to play the younger Odiyan feels necessary after having seen the movie. It's something the story demanded. Manju Warrier and Prakash Raj are also good. But the dubbing for Prakash Raj's character has taken something away from his performance. Siddique, Innocent and other supporting cast don't have too much to do. Songs are good as is the BGM. Cinematography is quite good as well.

For a country that is so much into storytelling for centuries its surprising that we are not able to put together a proper folklore movie. |
After watching the movie, I don't think Odiyan fits into the category of a folklore movie. The odiyan from folklore is some sort of a shape-shifting magician. In the movie, Odiyan is presented as an athlete / martial arts expert who uses the cover of darkness, costumes and other props to scare people. There is no magic, which is possibly the truth about an odiyan.
I think the pre-release hype has worked against the movie on the first day. The makers (especially the director) marketed it as a mass-movie like Pulimurugan and as a fantasy thriller. It is neither. Odiyan is a movie that you might enjoy if you watch it without preconceptions.

Agree with you. Watched it yesterday. It's definitely a one time watch.
Watched time movie KGF (Kannada) last week end at PVR in Mumbai. The screen play is good, followed by excellent background music and narration. Performances by the lead characters are spot on. The only fly in the ointment is overdose of action and violence which seems excessive and unnecessary at times.
Overall, a very sensible and watchable movie which manages to hold on the audience without the usual elements of romance, silly jokes or horror, which seems to be the only orders of the day. Rated KGF generously at 4.75 out of 5.
K.G.F.: Chapter 1 - It's been ages since I'd caught a Kannada movie and this film was a perfect restart! I purposely wanted to catch all the mania on the first day, and the experience was something else. To me, The Hero of the movie is the spine-chilling music, the action edit and film grading/colour composition was excellent and Yash owned the movie totally. A big round of applause to all involved. Jai Karnataka!
Just got back after watching KGF. Overall it's a good movie but I felt the editing could have been a little better. Would rate it a solid 3.5/5
After having stopped watching Kannada movies in theater for a couple of decades, there were quite a few good ones off late - "Godhi banna...", "Ondhu motteya kathe" "Rangi Tharanga" - which I watched and enjoyed.
Reluctantly went to watch the movie KGF (Kannada version) after reading some "good" reviews. Having watched the trailer of KGF, I knew there was usual violence in the film, but still had a hope of "some" storyline in the film. I fell into the trap of going by ratings, which I do not usually, but I was wrong....
The movie has matured from macchu, long and dagger !!! There are hammers, pickaxes, machine guns now ! Right from the word go, the movies drips with mindless violence, eardrum ripping sound, testosterone driven actions / dialogues and no story at all. :Frustrati
Rating : 0.5 / 5. (0.5 for the effort put for the sets and photography - and nothing else)
Like the 2 previous posts I watched KGF too, this morning, 9:00am !! Yes on a weekday, 9:00am in the morning barely an hour after I woke up.
My wife is a Mysorean who loves Kannada movies and this is her first movie in 3 years after my daughter's birth.
The movie is all bang bang, shoot shoot, chop chop and then some more of it with loads of heropanti dialogues. The movie is good. The gory killings and the gangster style is all built in and I feel those are an elementary part of establishing the hero's character. They went too far in making the hero for about 80% of the movie and forgot the KGF aspect and just brought it along. Guess that's what part 2 is for.
My favourite part of the movie was the black modded continental GT that looks kick ass like those MadMax bikes (well, almost) and the perfect gangster cars with rain pouring and the slow-mo roll in of these cars. I wanted to whistle, if only I knew how to do that the loud way with the thumb and index finger in the mouth. :D
Overall, good to see our Kannada movies gain so much national coverage but there is so much masala poured in, it could have been a magnum opus but it merely remains a fancy crore making movie.
Just my views.
Happy New Year boys and girls!
Saw the Malayalam movie
Njan Prakashan yesterday and it felt really really good. Fahadh was superb as the lead with great casting all around!
A lot of laughs and thought provoking incidents blended seamlessly by the timeless Sreenivasan + Sathyan combo. A must watch!!
Watched KGF Kannada on Christmas.
Things I liked:
Rocky's Beard...Beauty.
Rocky's Milky(Tamannah Bhatia)...Beautiful :D
Camera work...lovely slo-mos and Sarkar-esque frames.
Punch dialogues and Background score.
But that's it. It was a one dimensional movie for me. I felt as though I came out of a 3 hour butcher's shop tour. Please don't take your kids. Same old 1Vs1000 fights where all 1000 have guns but don't use it and come one by one, one after the other to get beaten up by the 1. Far too many fights made me yawn. Too many characters in the anti-hero team and Chapter 1 has only killed two characters. Chapter 2 will have more butchery and more blood. Will watch it anyway hoping against hope that the story will tie everything together and make sense in the end
3/5
2 for camera work...lovely slomos
0.5 for background score and dialogues
0.5 for the Beard :)

Happened to watch Njaan Prakashan twice.:). Although there is nothing ground breaking about it, the sathyan-sreeni combo along with an excellent performance by Fahad and the rest of the cast makes it a lovely film. Something very endearing about it. Seems to have clicked big time with the audience. Was very had to get tickets.
Also watched Pretham -2. A decent watch following the similar template of the first one.
Finally watched KGF yesterday. A good film. A new chapter in Kannada cinema. Piqued my interest enough to make sure I watch the second installment. Story line is ok and the visuals are good. Acting is a bit over the top but nothing too dramatic. A solid 4/5 rating.
KGF seems more like a superhero movie from Hollywood. If you think its one, you can believe it. Its shot really well and music score is relentless.
Petta - 3.5/5 stars
This movie is made for the true blue rajani fan. His mannerisms & panache from all his past movies seem to have been thrown together into this one movie. Music & screenplay are decent. Storyline is nothing new but Karthik Subbaraj as usual manages to throw in a googly towards the end. On the whole a decent watch as it's a throwback to older Rajani movies.
K.G.F.: Chapter 1 > 3.5/5 Stars
Watched KGF during Christmas and was impressed with the photography and the sets. The background score is done well and Yash I must say has an excellent screen presence. Like some of the others have called out, the storyline I felt was the weak point of the movie.
In terms of comparisons made by the other people who have commented before on this thread, I agree with them as well: Rangitaranga, Godhi Banna etc had excellent and very strong storylines and were very high on emotional content. KGF is more of a mass film and one needs to assess this movie from that perspective and compare with that genre and my rating is based that way...
I am surprised by the IMDB rating of 8.9 as well: IMDB:
URL :Shockked:
I recently read that this movie has crossed
200 crores and is now the biggest blockbuster that Kannada cinema has ever seen. I am not surprised by this result since I followed the promotions of the film closely. My explanation to this success is more the connect that actor Yash established with the people all over India via the promotions that were carried out. By speaking in the local language of each state that the team visited Yash definetely won over the hearts of the audience in each of the states which resulted in such a huge support for the movie. Icing on the cake was that he managed to get SS Rajamouli to endorse and support the movie as well.
A lesson to be learnt by other makers in promoting films across multiple languages indeed.
And in Hindi, Farhan Akhtar and Anil Thadani (Raveena Tandon's husband) supported him to the hilt - in spite of Zero releasing on the same date. Farhan and SRK go back a long time and must have been a tough decision. But Yash won everybody over.
