Does anyone have Oscar fishes?

I've been having some problems with this Oscar we bought some 3-4 months ago.

My dad had initially got them as a pair. Everything was fine until they started growing, that is. One fine day i checked out the tank, to find that one guy is missing.

I had no clue as to what might have happened until i looked behind a rock. I was shocked to see that the dominant fish had actually killed the other guy.

Since then, i haven't had the heart to introduce any other fish into his tank, as he might kill it too.

I did some online research and found a few things :

1. Each grown Oscar requires atleast 45-55 gallons of water to himself (our tank is just 21 gallons)

2. It's not advisable to keep 2 male oscars in the same tank, unless they are kept in a large group (we had just 2 males in one tank).

Some sites recommend Plecos, Blue Gouramis and Pacos as suitable tank mates but, i'm not sure if this guy'll except them.

Now, this guys' grown to around 6 - 7" (head to tail). We plan to go in for a 70+ gallon tank so that he'll have enuf room for himself.

Until then, he'll have to spend his days alone.

Has anyone else experienced such problems with their Oscars?

One thing about these fishes is that they're pretty smart.

Hes' able to differentiate between his food packet and any other and lets me pat his forehead (that is soooo cool).

Hope things work out for him.

I have OSCAR fishes, 4-5" big
i have a pair and they dont fight at all

they dont kill the other breeds also

i have left them with tiger sharks and silver sharks and they are a happy family

he has the aggressive look but never gets aggressive, the only time when he is aggressive is during feeding time, he has to have an entire cube of dry worms all for himself

i kno ..but Plural for Fish is also Fish (not fishes)
The plural fishes refers to two or more specimens of different species.

Oscars are complete bad asses and they grow very fast too ...a fish grows throughout its life doesnt it ?

they are the least aggressive in larger groups and if 2 are kept in a tank the stronger one will atatck the weaker one and if 3 are kept in a tank 2 weaker ones will gang up to attack the stronger one ...

they also tolerate a few specific species , like those tiny sharks (i dont know wot they are called ) ,tiger fish etc

Hmmm, maybe they get aggressive as they get bigger. My guy is 8 inches now (was 5 when we bought him). So, i'll have to find a fish that is atleast 8" long, anything smaller and he'll gobble them up.

A fully grown male can measure upto 14" (that's as long as the alloys on my car, hehe)

Guys,

Slightly off topic, but could not resist. I don't know much about fish, so I googled oscar fish and found a site called oscarfish.com.

Never knew that Oscar was such a popular fish. The site even has its own forum !
