Hi everybody
In today's Mumbai Mirror(a Times of India group publication) has this tip for weight reduction
It will appeal to all of us and at the same time will give another reason to drive to Ladakh.
An excerpt from Jhakharia's column on page 12
Simple! Stay in Ladakh for an extended period of time. Two weeks of vacation equals a loss of two kg of weight despite a 2-eggs and four-toasts breakfast and reasonable-sized vacation lunches and dinners.
It’s all about the height! The higher you live-…oh and the 77th floor of a building in Mumbai doesn’t count…the more weight you lose.
So…forget the calorie counts, the “athais”, the running and the gym. All you need is to shift to Leh or Siachen or Tawang. While you may freeze to death in the winters or your brain may swell till it bursts or you may get clots in your lungs…you will still lose weight! And it’s all scientifically validated! Seriously!
Regards

In a cold place which is also way above sea level, the body burns more energy and fat to breathe easy as well as keep warm.
However, the food intake has to also be sensible in order to lose weight.

I didn't have any doubt that it wouldn't be difficult to find a thread on Weight loss at TBHP; there is simply a thread for every reason and season. Found this when I was looking for a thread of body building (which I remembered seeing).
I'm on a weight loss regime now (just started), having a good mix of cardio and exercises to shed the flabby fat that I so carefully built over 30 years. Only when you perform these exercises does one realise the difficulty in trying to shed what was very easily earned.
One of the items in my nutrition plan is to try having a simple protein shake after the 1 hour and 15 minutes workout session. Through advice and research I've identified that Whey Isolate is the one to go for, which gives a high protein content and safe(r)?
Want to see if anyone can recommend a safe and good brand that I can purchase without much difficulty in B'lore (also open to buying online within India). Requirement is maximum protein in least calories added and also that it isn't extremely pricey.
Would prefer to try a smaller (starter) pack/box before going for those 4kgs boxes (if possible). Please understand your suggestions matter in helping someone's health choice so kindly make them using immense discretion. Thanks for your time. :)
Hello Kini,
After many years of piling up fat and sitting on the fence with starting a weight loss plan, I finally decided it is time and joined a gym last sunday. I have been given a good veggie diet/nutrition plan as well, to support the cardio and exercises + simple weights regime I've started with. In my breakfast, along with Oats and I've been allowed a veg sandwich made using 2 whole wheat bread slices but you say no bread. Did you mean white *maida* bread? Or is Bread a totally must avoid product?
And I agree with you. I've been explained why weight training is also important and how it aids weight loss and I totally agree with the requirement (of course, not the kind of intensive weight training body builders undergo). |
Sorry for the late reply, didn't get a private message that I was quoted.
Glad to see you are on the right track. AFAIK all varieties of bread contain some carbohydrates and maida. Just check the ingredients. Whole wheat bread during day time is not bad, but salad/ channa/sprouts would be better. Try to have your meals in small quantity four/five times a day!! (If you are having oats at 8, have your sandwich/salad at 10)
I am an extremely overweight person (165 cm, 87 kg). I was tired of only called as fatty in the office and started to decrease the weight. I have bought a digital scale one month back and downloaded insanity workout videos. After 1 month of training in insanity and 30 minutes of strict diet in the morning I have dropped to 77.5 kg at least according to my digital scale. I always weigh myself on Friday mornings in my home and this time I thought of checking my weight in office. So I put on my office clothes and checked my weight and it was showing 78.5. This 1 kg extra weight is due to my clothes, belt, tie etc. Now I walk into my office directly without taking food or water in between to avoid weight fluctuations and I stood on my office digital scale. It showed 80.9, a difference of 2.4 kg than my home scale :Shockked:. So I went to the analogue scale in my office and weighed myself. It is showing 80 kg. So again I went online to check an expensive weight scale, the product specification quotes a difference of +/- kg in reading. The scale I am using currently having an accuracy of +/- 100 gm is acting like this. My question is how you guys are checking your weight and from where? How we can get an accurate reading of our weight?

Weigh on the same scale always. I tend to believe your scale at home.

-Here is a method to find out if your scale shows accurate method .
-In industries , we use a standard weight to check the accuracy , I doubt if you can get hold of one . Otherwise you can check the accuracy of these scales using packed groceries like a 5kgs wheat bag or 5 kg rice bag .
Do not use very light weight (less than 1 kg) to verify. See if you can borrow some weights from a nearby provision store . They usually keep 5kgs and 10kg stones. +/- 100g is acceptable I guess :thumbs up
Actually you don't need to measure accurate weight as you are not interested in absolute number but the difference between weight now and at the starting point. If zero error is not dynamic then difference will always be same.
So measure on same scale at same time of the day under same conditions.
If you are interested in absolute weight then first find the zero error by measuring a known 5/10 Kg weight as girimajiananth explained and then adjust the zero error in the scale reading.
You may like to keep the scale in your bathroom and measure early in morning empty stomach 'Au Naturel' to get actual accurate weight.
Anybody here using one of these ?
Tunturi Chin Up Bar.
I bought one last month, and for the life of me , cant figure out how to mount it on my door frame. I screw (unscrew?) it as far as it would go on a flat door frame, but it always manages to slide down when I put my weight on it.
Does it have to be on a wooden doorframe ?
The bar didnt come with installation instructions as such , and from the washers and screws I found in the packaging , I think we are expected to drill holes and use it. Which sorta defeats the purpose of this.
I think I saw a few internet videos which show bars which need no such drilling.

Well I do not know much about tanturi but usually such bars have adjustible length and method is to place at the top of the door frame and expand till it fits tight in doorframe. However I really do not think you can fit any bar in doorframe tight enough to hold weight of human body and it is bound to slip. I am sure little search on youtube will throw up videos to give you idea of the fitting.
However let me ask couple of questions to you , I am sorry if I break your heart in process.
1. Are you overweight or your BMI more then 22 ? If not then probably this is not the right thread and you should look at the body building thread.
2. Is the power to weight ratio of your upperbody good enough for one complete chin-up ? If not then how exactly you plan to bring it to the level where you can regularly use this bar.
Chipups need very strong shoulders , back , lateral dorsi and core.
If answer to Q1 is Yes and Q2 is No then I would suggest try alternative excercises to increase upper body strength and reduce weight before you
move on to chinups.
Some good excrcises can be pushups , dips and sqauts before you can do chinups.
Another good alternative is to do assisted chinup using machine in a gym where you can place weight to counter some of the bodyweight before graduating to fullbody weight.
I have read some of the posts here at random and perhaps this will be helpful to someone:
Losing weight isn't the real problem, if one has some will power and discipline to stick to a diet for a few months. Exercise is more for fitness and health, and to bring in the motivation to lose weight, but weight loss happens from diet. Excluding of course the very rare cases of hormonal imbalance caused weight issues.
The real problem is keeping off the weight that is shed, and the related problem is that one can't stay on a diet forever.
What is key to this is changing one's relationship with food and breaking some habits related to how we eat. That is far more important than what one eats.
The best book I have read on this subject is the first one by Rujuta Diwekar. Lose your weight, not your mind - or some such, I forget the exact words of the title. A treasure house of wisdom, and no, I am not affiliated with her in any way.

Its 'Don't lose your mind, lose your weight'
Weight loss is a big industry so there are lots of views and material from various schools of thought.
IMHO it is best to ignore all of these and sick to two basic things healthy diet and about one hour of exercise every day. Exercise should be mix of aerobics, weight training and stretching.
Give your self 6 months to one year and body weight will stabilise at a healthy point.
Good thing about following the basics is that you will realise very soon that you have shifted the goalpost from merely losing weight to getting good physique/ trying out tracking/ running half marathon or something else which looked impossible to you an year back.

I did search on youtube, and they all simply tightened the bar until it was able to hold the installer's weight just fine.
I am thinking of having holes drilled to install it finally. But I got this precisely to avoid this thing.

I have no idea about my BMI. I dont know if I am overweight. Heck, I dont even know my current weight. Last I checked, it was hovering ~70kg on my 5'7" frame.
I am not thin though. Far from it.

I last tried them on a regular bar this last year, and managed a few allright.

Ok. didn't know Muscleblaze wasn't an established one.
Isopure is pricey for sure. For that price, why not Optimum Nutrition Platinum Hydro Whey? I'm still new to all this so would be happy to understand if a particular brand (Isopure) is better than another (ON Hydro Whey).
My main intent behind slowly bringing in supplement is just to increase direct protein intake and reduce carbs. In addition to this, my other main sources of protein are a glass of milk a day, peas in my boiled veggies and 2 boiled egg whites during lunch.
Thanks for any help.
Also, which is a good site to order these Whey proteins at a competetive price? Currently i'm looking at Healthkart.com. Any place in Bangalore which stocks most brands and sell at reasonable prices?
Edit: From quick comparo of IsoPure Zero Carb and ON Platinum Hydro Whey, IsoPure does seem to have lesser or no sugar and carbs than Hydro Whey. Am I right in my interpretation of the product's specs? |
Isopure & O.N are both established brands. I personally consume O.N because of the price differential. Yes Isopure has fewer calories but that will be useless if you do not regulate your diet. I consume O.N & ensure I don't take higher calories from other food sources
I consume 4 eggs a day along with chicken breasts cooked in minimum oil apart from my protein shakes. However, my goal is to build muscle. Evaluate your exercise program and then consult how much protein with regards to your body weight would you be requiring per day.
Check if you have any NeuLife stores in Bangalore. Here in Delhi, they are recognized by the Delhi govt and I just hop into their store to pick up whey. Healthkart is reliable from what I've heard but no personal experiences yet.
