Team-BHP - Want to be a TUNER. Help please!

Some want to be a dockor
Some want to be a Engineer

But I want to be a Tuner.

Yes a TUNER.There are many out there whos level i cant match.
All i want is the right guidance from you people,right guidance to shape my future.

I am 19,finished with my diploma in automobiles now in 2nd year(from a pvt university).
Being from a private university we have been having more of practical knowledege.
I was in a Maruti Service Center for about 6 months & its so much fun to work on a car.

And i really dont know the right place to go which would finally make me a fine tuner.
I know it will take years but i guess its time to start.

Anyone willing to help ? please:

I need to know which direction to Head.

I really dont know where to point you here, typically it would start off as an assistant in a modifications shop, learning the ropes all around till you find one area you like the most and would like to specialize in, then pick up skills in that area.

As for being a tuner you would need to learn all the ropes of maintaining a car, how to modify it, related principles and approaches and then start putting it to practice.

Note I said practice as you cannot do so on customer cars unless you have someone guiding you.

After saying all this what I would typically ask is what area of specialization are you looking at (rally, street, track etc...) as it would depend on these factors as to where you would need to start knocking on doors.

About putting things to practical(on my car)- i had PM'd a few members to know which car would be the best to start with if i wanted to learn.Like getting it modded step by step so that i could get to know the difference each part makes i would have actually got to experience it.But i never got a reply.

I think i am more towards the street cars tuning.

Don't know if i can setup up my own shop later (i love to dream) but i really want to learn it for myself first.

How about looking at courses in Motorsport Technology or something along the lines? Since you've worked with Maruti, you should know about engines, suspension etc. But what about Vehical Dynamics, Setups and the effects of changes on a vehical? Hey samir,if you know any of the courses please do tell me.Yes working in a service center has helped but they really don't give that kind of exposure.In my 6 months time there were only two engines opened up & guess what even the mech's were struggling to set the timing,etc & putting it back.Like you said there are loads of variables & i want to find a right place to learn those.:)

Neil, what nandan told was mail to him if you have his id regarding your intrest,what you want to be and how you want to start and things like that. if you say "you want to a tuner" then anyone will say "go and be a tuner" why you are coming to me. So it is better to ask advice rather than tell them that what you want to be atleast in the intro mail

Oh! So even you have a dream similar to mine.

Even I wanted to be a tuner/modifier from a very young age. After I joined T-BHP that urge grew further.

I am currently in my final year of Auto. engg. so just six months to go.

Now I planned to get into the tuning stuff but found its not something one can learn easily. Doing project is a good thing, you'll learn a lot from it but main problem is who would sponsor one?

Also a good tuning shop would be able to offer a complete package and not just a single mod and heres where the question of specialization arises.
As you might be aware a small change in the engine design would make a lot of difference in the final performance, add to that the design of your exhaust and other components (it just keeps on getting more and more).

Now I have liking towards styling of cars so I have currently decided to have my own Automobile workshop (in or near Mumbai) which will be specially known for body kits and paint jobs (you need to start somewhere).
At a later stage I'll try and tie-up with some specialist in the field of tuning to provide a complete racing package to the customer.

So my suggestion to you is decide what you like and try and get better at it.
And yes, you always have T-BHP to get back and learn more.
