Son is a minor and his passport needs to be renewed. Missus goes with her passport, annexure D, son's passport, and all other documents except mine as mine had gone for renewal. Doc checker (Counter 1) says the father's passport is a must. So got all the other processes done, but the file is pending. I am going there tomorrow for giving my passport copy to the file. Let us see what happens
!

Sorry to hear about your experience. However, the officials were not wrong in asking for both parents passports. It is required for minor passport and they have to enter both parents details in the child's application at the counter B. Your renewal application receipt along with your wife's passport would have suffice.

As a best practice, it is always advisable for both parents to be present (and carry passports if available and valid). If one of the parent is unable to accompany then passport should be carried by other parent.

Minor application needs little more scrutiny by the officials to determine genuine case and also rule out any foul play (in cases where parents are separated, don't get along or don't want to provide consent etc etc). Hence officials insists on seeing both parents or at least passports. I don't see anything wrong on their part.

Passport processing is one of the most efficient govt service there is (provided documents are in order) so let's give them credit where it is due.

Pretty impressive, my wife went to the passport seva kendra yesterday to present all docs for passport renewal. The renewed passport arrived this afternoon! There were no data changes, so I guess that helped. Only thing I don't get is why we had to go to the police station this morning for verification?! If the passport was already being printed, what is the point of verification?

She received 2 messages yesterday, one that the passport had been dispatched and one for police verification. We figured that the office must have selected the verification option by mistake, but went anyway.

Still, very impressive turnaround.

People in Mumbai, what documents are needed for passport verification at police station?
I just got my passport renewed and have POST verification so I guess I will get passport first and verification will happen next.

I found this website..

https://mumbaipolice.maharashtra.gov...portstatus.asp

For residential proof, is society letter needed or we can also do with bank passbook (PPF Ok?) as mentioned.

Society letter clearly mentioning the name, address, and tenure of stay, worked for us in the past. Bank photo passbook is also a valid proof in my experience.

In neighbouring Thane, where we got the PPF done for a family member, we were required to go to the Police Station with the documents for verification. There was no physical visit by the police to the address.

Took a photo of the documents required as below. Hope it helps.

My passport reissue (without any change in details) require police verification. Last time I did not have to go through police verification. Is reissue requiring police verification now?

In Counter A, the lady filling the form selected change in particulars as reason for reissue. So I suspect that maybe the reason. Just wanted to confirm. Thanks

It is at the discretion of the officer at counter C to decide the type of police verification (pre-issue, post-issue or no verification). I happen to ask her last time I went for re-issue. She said that if they believe person's appearance have changed or they find any info missing in their system about previous passport then they chose post-verification. Your case might be similar I suppose, even though your particulars did not change.

Obviously, if there is any change (however minor it may be) in particulars or passport has expired more than 6 months ago then police verification is required.

One of my relatives in Mumbai had given his passport for renewal quite a few months back - but for a long time the status is showing as Police Verification Pending. He went almost a month back to the police station to ask them & they said, they have his papers but they have a lot of backlog & hence taking time. It's a been month since then & still no contact from the police. Is there anything which can be done to speed this up?

Also, from memory, I remember that police verification used to be done only if your address has changed from the previous passport you had, if not the assumption was your address has been verified with your neighbours etc the previous time & hence the exercise need not be repeated? Has this changed or have they started redoing it? Or is just that the police need to clear your file without actually visiting you if your address has not changed?

This is surprising that police verification is pending for months together. Can you please share more details - was passport granted on pre or post verification basis, how long ago the old passport expired, any particulars changed from old passport, did the person stay at more than one residence in last 12 months, what documents were submitted (did he have aadhar/voter id/DL for address proof).

Police verification timing depends on various factors and I have heard that police is more vigilant in Mumbai in terms of documents required. But if the application is straightforward and backed by proper documents then the person should visit RPO for enquiry.

He hasn't got the passport yet.

Same address for 45 years & last 2-3 passports.

Had whatever documents as required.

It's a harassment technique. They arbitrarily ask too many documents. Far, far more than what the passport office asks & also the document check was done twice - once by a policeman who came to my home & then again at the police station. Same happened to me also when my passport was renewed. But the case here is different, they haven't asked for anything yet - they haven't even taken up his case yet. All formalities are done except the police verification. It's been pending for more than a month now.

He did that also this week. The RPO said it's pending with the police.
He also visited the police station - they aren't saying there is any problem - just that they haven't go to him yet.

I'm surprised to know that passport was granted on pre-verification basis even though it was a renewal case with no change in particulars. I'd have at least expected that passport was issued first and then verification was initiated as done in almost all renewal cases (un complicated cases).

Was he told any thing by the officer at the counter C during the renewal appointment, why application was granted on pre verification basis. It is unusual unless they have a reason to get the police report first. Here, the case facts you have shared look pretty straight forward so officer's decision is perplexing to me.

Secondly, police verification may take 30-45 days (it may be considered standard turn around time as per the officials). Although in most cases, this step usually gets over in 2-3 weeks. May be that particular police station is really busy or may be expecting some palm greasing, no way to know.

I'd say, be patient and if it is still pending after 45 days of appointment, then follow up again.

I don't understand the question - isn't application & appointment always before the verification?

It's 42 days after the appointment now.

At the passport Seva Kendra, Passport application is processed (granted) based on three types of police verification required (to the best of my knowledge)

1. No verification : Passport is issued (dispatched) without any police verification. This is rare and only applicable for renewal cases where no change in details from old passport (and passport did not expire more than 6 months ago). May also be applicable for minor children whose parent/s have valid passport.

2. Post-Verification : In most of the renewal applications, passport is granted and dispatched first and police verification happens later. Depends on case to case basis but quite common unless paperwork is not fool proof or old passport expired more than 6 months ago.

3. Pre-verification : The most common police verification we all are familar with. Police verification happens first and only upon successful verification, the passport is granted and dispatched. Applicable for first time applicants and also for renewal if the officials are not convinced about the documents submitted or there are significant changes in the personal information from old passport or old passport expired more than 6 months ago. Also happens if the person has stayed at more than 1 residence in past 12 months. Police has to verify at all the places of stay in such cases.

Above cases are decided by the officer at counter C during the passport application at PSK. It is totally his/her discretion what kind of police verification is required.

Your case looks to be related to #1 above but your passport application was approved as #3. I'd have expected #2 if not #1.

That's why I was wondering if the officer at counter C mentioned anything regarding why pre-verification was required if your old passport details did not change and also not expired more than 6 months ago.

Hope this helps.

This is not my passport - this is a relative's passport & the officer didn't mention anything.

If I apply for a passport address change, will I get the new passport with 10 years validity, or will I get the existing validity transferred to a new passport?

New passport with 10-year validity. Also, as the passport is new, the passport number will also be different.
