What happens after the registration validity of my car expires

Hi Guys,

Its mentioned in my RC book(the smart card types) that my car registration is till 06/12/10. Considering my car is 15 yrs old i have got a few questions,

1)Can the registration be renewed considering the car is 15 yrs old,

2) If the registration cannot be renewed then, would I be allowed to drive around in the car,

3) Can I sell the car post the last date of registration,

4) My insurance is valid till June 2011, what happens on that front,

Cannot think of anything else to ask at the moment but I would really appreciate if senior members or mods or anyone who knows about these things guide me to the right directions.

This is urgent guys as I might very well have to sell off the car ASAP.

Many thanks.

My answers. This is what I did with my 15 yr old Fiat.

1) Yes. You need to do FC(Fitness Certificate) + Green Tax

2)You are not supposed to drive. It will be a problem in case of an accident.

3)Depends on the person who buys it. But FC is needed at the time of transfer of Documents.

4)Valid Insurance is necessary to do FC.

@MihirC, your questions answered, hope this helps.

1)Can the registration be renewed considering the car is 15 yrs old,

Yes it can be after the vehicle passes fitness test. Once renewed the registration is valid for the next 5 years. Then after 5 years you should renew it again and the cycle continues.

2) If the registration cannot be renewed then, would I be allowed to drive around in the car,

Driving around in a car with invalid registration is illegal. It could land you in very serious trouble if you get into an accident. Insurance will not cover you, you could land up with massive liability on your hands.

3) Can I sell the car post the last date of registration,

Sure you can, if the buyer agrees. But the buyer can only get the vehicle transferred to his name after the car passes Fitness Certification and its registration renewed.

4) My insurance is valid till June 2011, what happens on that front,

Once the registration of your car has expired. The insurance will be void. Meaning company will not cover you. Insurance is there till 2011 assuming that the car has a valid registration. So renew the registration as soon as it is due for the insurance to be valid.

Once both insurance and registration runs out, you will not be able to renew the insurance if you don't renew the registration.

Thanks a lot both ,Sankar and Fiatmylife for your replies, they really helped. My worry was that I have heard of some rule ,atleast here in Mumbai that private vehicles cannot be retained for more than 15 yrs.(ofcourse vintage/classics wont be a part of the clause) Any idea of such rules in Mumbai/Bangalore/TRV??

Thanks for the link GTO, It did help quite a bit. I guess this is one of the rare threads on the forum.

P.S- Mods please shift this thread to the Indian Car Scene section if necessary.

Re: What happens after the registration validity of my car expires

I have few queries regarding the fitness:
1. Can we renew the fitness a year before the expiry date?
2. What happens with the registration no of the car if the fitness is not done; will that be re-issued to some new vehicle by transport department?
3. After the expiry of fitness certificate (5 years) can it be further renewed? Finally, what happens to the registration no of the vehicle?

Thanks in advance
