And the auction is today. The top picks expected are as far as I think:
1. KP (expect DD to go for him)
2. Corey Anderson (expect CSK to bid heavily for him)
3. WI All-rounders
Among Indians:
1. Yuvi
2. Sehwag
3. Irfan
CSK would again try to get back its own men, RR & KXIP would try to save money for their owners' party :)
Expect DD's fireworks really this time (only in the Auction)

I expect DD will get all the top guys, since they have 60 crores to play with. Looks like DD is really gunning for the title this year.

Correct - Only if the teams on paper would be as good on the field, probably MI would have won everything so far, every edition.
Updates from auction after round 1:
- DD buy Murali Vijay for 5 crore
- DD retain Pietersen for 9 crore
- RCB buy Yuvraj for 14 crore:
- KKR retain Kallis for 5.5 crore
- KXI Punjab buy Sehwag for 3.20 crore
- Sunrisers Hyderabad buy Warner for 5.5 crore
- KXI Punjab get Mitchell Johnson for 6.5 crore
Jayawardene is unsold.
RCB still left to buy bowlers. Not sure why Amit Mishra was paid so much. He has been pathetic in Irani trophy (all RoI bowlers for that matter).
Ross Taylor is unsold, consistency has been a problem with him.
Rest of India lose by innings and 222 runs to Karnataka. Great reserve strength for India :(
Congratulations to the Karnataka team for lifting the Irani trophy for the fifth time clap: A totally one sided affair with Karnataka winning by an innings and 222 runs. Vinay Kumar claimed 10 wickets in the match and Shreyas Gopal claimed a hat-trick. Binny and Gautam laid a solid foundation with their centuries.

I smell a Sri Lankan snub here. None of the Lankans have been sold yet.
Maybe because they didn't vote for the Big 3 proposal.

Murali (a Sri Lankan Tamil) was sold to RCB for 1 cr. Perera sold for 1.6 cr to KXIP.
No one else from Lanka could get a price.

I am not sure how the contracts are drafted, any idea if there are any performance linked fees / pay out for these *cricketers*? Or is there a like a penalty to be paid back to the franchises if , hypothetically a batsman does not average more than 20 runs per match?

They are paid the entire amount even if they don't get to play in the 11, case in point being Maxwell for Mumbai Indians last season!
Some amount is deducted i assume if they are not in the squad for certain reason like being away at national duty.
Ashish Nehra bought by CSK for 2cr. They seriously are missing a 'cricket enthusiast' at the auction!:D
