Myth of Pure and natural honey

The honey sold in indian markets contain banned antibiotics.

CSE busts the myth about ‘natural and pure’ honey

But what is even worse and shows the regulatory double-standards is that the two foreign brands tested by CSE – from Australia and Switzerland – had high levels of antibiotics and would certainly be illegal in their own countries.

“It is clear that foreign companies are taking advantage of the lack of regulations in India. After all, if our government does not care about the health of its people, why should these companies care?” said Sunita Narain, director, CSE, at the release of the study’s findings here today. “We have standards for antibiotic contamination in the honey we export. Government even tests and certifies that exported honey meets health and safety regulations. But we do not have any standards for domestic honey. This is clearly unacceptable.”

*Continued long-term exposure to these medicines can lead to serious health effects, besides triggering antibiotic resistance in pathogens

*For this reason most countries have banned antibiotics in food products and reject honey exported with this contamination

The study, which tested leading brands of honey, found high levels of antibiotics – from the banned chloramphenicol to broad spectrum ciprofloxacin and erythromycin – in almost all brands sold in the market.


Besides the presence of the contaminants, investigations by CSE has also exposed the murky underbelly of the international honey trade, where fraud, deceit and illegal trade practices rule the roost (see Factsheet on international trade for details).

To begin with, two key questions

1. Antibiotics are medicines. So why are they bad in honey?
Studies have pointed out that chronic exposure to antibiotics – doses taken in small amounts on a daily basis for a long period -- can lead to a variety of health problems. For instance, exposure to oxytetracycline, one of the antibiotics tested by the CSE lab, can lead to blood-related disorders and liver injury. But more importantly, antibiotics in honey (and perhaps other foods as well) have the potential to generate large-scale antibiotic resistance, leading to a collapse of healthcare systems and medications (see Factsheet on antibiotic resistance and health impacts).

“Moreover”, asks Chandra Bhushan, deputy director, CSE, “internationally, regulations consider honey to be a ‘natural’ product. We eat it because we believe it will do us good, because it is ‘pure’. So why should we be finding human-made antibiotics in it?”

He adds: “Regulators in the European Union (EU) and the US say antibiotics in honey are ‘unauthorised’ and therefore ‘illegal’, unless there is a standard regulating their levels. India does not have any standards for domestically marketed honey, which gives a good excuse to our regulators to look the other way while public health gets battered.”

2. Where does honey get antibiotics from?
The beekeeping industry uses antibiotics to control and prevent outbreaks of diseases in honeybees, and as growth promoters to increase production. And these antibiotics are finding their way into that spoonful which reaches the householder’s table. This is also because the biodiversity of bees has changed – the Indian bee, more adapted to natural environments, has been replaced by the more productive European bee (Apis mellifera). Simultaneously, the trade of honey collection has also changed – from small producers to large cartels of honey producers – contracting small producers and pushing for high productivity and profits. The business is no longer that of health.

The CSE study
CSE’s Pollution Monitoring Lab, or PML, tested 12 branded honey samples for six antibiotics, and found antibiotics in 11 samples. The tested samples were bought randomly from various markets in Delhi in July 2009. Of the 12, 10 were Indian brands and two were imported brands.

The six antibiotics that PML looked for were oxytetracycline, chloramphenicol, ampicillin, erythromycin, eurofloxacin and ciprofloxacin. Among the domestic brands tested were Dabur Honey of Dabur India Ltd, which holds over 75 per cent of the market share in the branded segment; Himalaya Forest Honey of Himalaya Drug Company, one of India’s oldest Ayurveda drug companies; Patanjali Pure Honey of Patanjali Ayurved Ltd, Haridwar; and Baidyanath Wild Flower Honey of Shree Baidyanath Ayurved Bhavan Pvt Ltd (Kolkata), which has about 10 per cent share in the branded honey market (see table for complete list).

The two imported brands were Capilano Pure & Natural Honey of Capilano Honey Ltd, the market leader in Australia, exporting honey to over 40 countries; and Nectaflor Natural Blossom Honey of Narimpex AG with its production site in Biel, Switzerland.

*Oxytetracycline or OTC was found in 50 per cent of the samples in the range of 27 to 250 microgram per kg (μg/kg). This is almost 3 to 25 times higher than the 10 μg/kg standard fixed by the Indian government’s Export Inspection Council (EIC) for exported honey. The highest level was detected in Khadi Honey of Khadi Gram Udyog Sewa Samiti, Madhyapura, Bihar.

*Chloramphenicol, banned by the EU was found in 25 per cent of the samples, with its levels 9 to 15 times higher than the 0.3 μg/kg standard fixed by the EIC. The highest level was detected in Gold Honey of Vardhman Food & Pharmaceuticals.

*Ampicillin was found in 67 per cent of the samples at a concentration of 10 to 614 μg/kg. The highest level was detected in Nectaflor Natural Blossom Honey of Switzerland. There is no standard for ampicillin in honey in any country because it is not supposed to be used in beekeeping. It is, therefore, an unauthorised or illegal substance in honey. Similarly, enrofloxacin, ciprofloxacin and erythromycin, which do not have any standards either, are being illegally used.

* Dabur Honey had 91.3 μg/kg of OTC, which is nine times the EIC standard. It also had 26.6 μg/kg of ampicillin and 88.7 μg/kg of enrofloxacin. Essentially, the sample was found to be non-compliant with the EIC standards and would be rejected if placed for exports to the EU or the US.

* Of the six antibiotics tested, the highest number - five – were detected in the Swiss Nectaflor Natural Blossom Honey sample. It had 112 μg/kg of OTC, 11 times the EIC standard. Chloramphenicol was found at a level of 3.6 μg/kg, which is 12 times over the EIC standard. It also had highest levels of ampicillin and erythromycin. The sample was found to be non-compliant with the EIC as well as EU regulations.

*The Capilano Pure & Natural Honey sample was found to contain three antibiotics and was non-compliant with the EIC export standards as well as some standards imposed in Australia itself.

* The fact that more than one antibiotic was found in the samples indicates that the prevalent practice is to collect honey from different sources and then blend them before packing and distributing for sale. This brings into question the issue of traceability of honey.


We’re Indians. We don’t need regulations
What’s strange is the reticence of Indian regulators towards setting and enforcing standards. In India, honey is currently regulated under three legislations:

* Prevention of Food Adulteration (PFA) Rules, 1955, which is a mandatory standard.
* The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) norms for extracted honey (IS 4941:1994).
* Honey Grading and Marking Rules, 2008 under the Agricultural Produce (Grading and Marking) Act, 1937 (AGMARK).

All three define honey as a “natural product” and lay down standards for its composition and quality (sucrose content, total reducing sugars, hydroxymethyl furfural, moisture content etc) - but there are no standards for antibiotics or other contaminants in honey (see Factsheet on regulations).

The Export Inspection Council (EIC) has however set antibiotic standards for the honey that is exported. This is referred to as ‘Level of Action (LOA)’ - the limit beyond which a sample is deemed non-compliant and rejected for exports. An elaborate system of monitoring (called Residue Monitoring Plan or RMP) has also been put in place, and the EIC, under the Union ministry of commerce and industries, has been entrusted with the task of checking exports.

The country suffers in case of improper monitoring or checks – in June 2010, the EU had banned Indian honey from entering any of its 27 member countries because the consignments were contaminated with antibiotics and heavy metals.

But these monitoring, checks and norms do not apply to honey available in the domestic market. There are hardly any reports on antibiotic contamination of honey consumed within the country. India also imports honey -- but there is no standard to check its quality either. Says Narain: “Food safety regulations are supposed to be monitored by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India.

But the Authority, despite being in existence for almost four years, has failed to do anything to safeguard consumer health. Says Narain: “In fact, it only works for the benefit of big business to undermine our bodies and our health. Our study on honey is only one indicator of the takeover of our food business and tells us that action is needed fast and urgent. We cannot allow business to be more important than the food we eat.”

Does it mean the honey that one buys from traders along road side in places like Kodagu will be antibiotic free? Or do they also have bee hives that they maintain like the other manufacturers?

The question is why extra antibiotics?

I believe honey itself has mild antibiotic properties!

Depends on where in coorg you buy it from. From what i have seen is that majority honey in coorg are cultivated in small batches and am yet to see a large scale industry kind set up which churns out couple of hundred kilos of honey.

Cant comment on the chemical properties though as i dont have data for the same

There are two things - the branded honey is from beehives, and does not contain any molasses etc which are often used to 'cut' the honey.

However, the other hand the Antibiotic content is high - possibly due to the use of these in bee boxes to prevent disease and death of the bees.

So the best bet may be imported natural honey from free range bees. Very expensive but hopefully with much less of antibiotics.

I always take pronouncements from CSE and CERC with a pinch of salt. Remember CSE campaigned (all the way to the SCI) against Diesel cars just before the Indica was launched. By their vary nature such organizations have to a bit sensational.

Also, how does one find out if the honey being sold is not adulterated? My father used to say that if you drop a drop of honey in front of a dog and the dog eats it, it is impure mixed with sugar syrup and if the dog doesn't eat it, it is pure.

I have tried this and could never find "impure" honey.
And I prefer to buy honey from a reliable street vendor compared to Dabur or Real or any such brand.

A lot of bee keepers use heavy doses of antibiotics and anti fungal drugs to keep bees disease free, thats why antibiotic comes in honey.
This contamination always happens in food chain.
For example pesticides find their way into vegetables, fish from polluted rivers have heavy metals in them etc.,

Now my question will be, as a non consumer of honey, do I really need to worry about this? I know honey is being used by the pharma industry for manufacturing medicines, are they also prone to have high antibiotics?

Well I was bored one evening and switched on TV there was some programme ( Krishi -Darshan kind) where focus for bee keeping and expert from some Institute was suggesting Antibiotic spary to keep bees disease free.

So it is clear that in absence of any regulation government bodies are themselves promoting antibiotic.

Forest Honey purchased from Adivasis while visiting some remote areas is the best IMHO.

Branded Honey may be having the so called illegal antibiotics, however finding pure honey would be difficult task esp in Metros.

I vaguely remember when I used to accompany my grandfather to the jungles along with few expert honey extracters who would climb up the trees and extract the honey. But the taste was entirely different and was not sugary enough to simulate the taste buds.

To think of it even today when someone has a itchy throat the home solution would be take honey mixed with haldi for instant relief.

Coming to think of it is your daily vegetables and fruits free of any antibiotics or pesticides? The water we drink and the milk we get from dairies? This is my rant but i believe selective research is done and its all for profit.

Well i know a lot of places which sells sugar syrup in the name of coorg honey. So usually buy it from coop stores in coorg is the best bet

See the report. Imported brands form Swiss and Australia have more amount of antibiotics than Indian brands. The table is there in the link.

In the CSE website link, go through the opinion of readers. Someone ( Preet Singh) says he is bee farmer, and also states it is almost difficult to get Honey of same consistency, taste and appearance batch after batch. It is true also. Because Honey bees do not manufature it , but they only collect it from plants. Honey from different plants will differ in taste, appearance and also consistency

I agree with the Doctor that CSE is sensational in their findings. Actually i am confused on these so called scientific findings-whisky is good in one finding and the next its bad, same with chocolates, coffee, green tea and so many other products. I follow a simple rule-nothing to de done in excess less humour and mirth-I laugh a lot and make people around me too.

If they have detected antibiotics, then we do not have to worry about the agenda of the organisation; we can make up our own minds!

Whilst they might be criticised for a point of view on diesel cars, it should be remembered that, as Judemayne says, international findings keep swinging on this one.

To me, every honey I buy in a Chennai shop tastes like the most mass-produced of British honey. I wish I could buy what I would call good honey here. Does anyone know of any shop selling forest-gathered honey? I expect it will be expensive.

It's good to be rational and even skeptical sometimes. However there's no smoke without a fire. I have a bottle of Dabur honey that sits in my kitchen. I guess I'm going to throw it out. I'll find something healthier to put on my pancakes.

I'm not at all surprised by the news. In India almost everything is adulterated. Your milk contains urea, your meat is laden with hormones and antibiotics, veggies are dyed to make them appear more colorful and fruits are artificially ripened using chemicals.There's no end to it! This is just the tip of the iceberg. To give an example, a restaurant manager once confided in me about how they made fake cashews at his previous workplace which was a bar. They would grind peanuts into a paste, add cashewnut essence (flavor), put them in cashew shaped plastic molds and bake them. Voila! Fake cashewnuts! If a bar owner is so ingenious imagine what bigger corporations are capable of.
