Traffic update by SMS - Bangalore

Saw an article in today's TOI about trafic updates by SMS. Also saw the same info on a digital signboard on BIAL expressway.
What is the use of these updates when you are supposed to switch off your phone while driving in Bangalore?
Or is there a special provision?

Re: Traffic update by SMS - Bangalore

The SMS updates have never been successful. Several police commissioners tried to implement a real time monitoring system and it also exists,

(Airtel cell sites & BTIS ) but have simply failed when it comes to on time delivery of messages. Besides cell sites monitoring traffic is based on the

hypothetical formula that every vehicle on the road is using an Airtel mobile connection

It's a flawed thinking right from the start.

Re: Traffic update by SMS - Bangalore

Instead of SMS they can think of a dedicated FM station for traffic updates.

Re: Traffic update by SMS - Bangalore

Are you talking about the SMSs you receive from BTP?

They have been around for a long time; I've personally been using them for just under 2 years.

Here's how they work :

1 SMS at 0901 with traffic updates
1 SMS at 1810 with traffic updates
1 SMS when it rains heavily advising against parking under trees
1 SMS when there's a cricket match at Chinnaswamy mentioning there's no parking facility there
1 SMS when some road is dug up or blocked or something similar
1 rare SMS when there's a HUGE traffic pile up some place

Honestly, I have never really benefited from any of the SMSs; for the simple reason that it ain't regular - on an average day, you just get 2 SMSs.

I used to get the messages briefly - atleast to alert for congestion. But no more.
(I have an Airtel connection)

Does the SMSs have anything to do with your connection?

I got them while I was on Vodafone.

@libran, not unless you have discovered something new ..

possible reason - tie-ups with operators/ service.

Re: Traffic update by SMS - Bangalore

Thane traffic have recently started SMS service for the traffic updates for which
1) You have to register on mobile no 9219592195 and then send SMS to get the updates.
2) You have to keep your mobile on to get the SMS which I rarely do when I am driving.
Is this going to be of any help to me at all? I dont think so.
